Chapter 19: No Way Out

845 Words
The sound of the door breaking didn’t just echo through the house, it shattered something inside me. For a split second, everything went quiet in my head, like my body refused to process what was happening. Then reality crashed back all at once, heavy and suffocating. They were inside. Not trying. Not threatening. Inside. My breathing turned uneven, sharp and fast, my chest rising too quickly to keep up with my thoughts. I looked at him, searching for something, anything that would tell me we still had control, but the way his jaw tightened told me the truth before he even spoke. “Stay behind me,” he said. Footsteps. Heavy. Slow. Deliberate. Each one echoed from the front of the house, moving deeper inside like whoever it was had no fear, no hesitation. They weren’t rushing. They didn’t need to. That confidence alone made my skin crawl. “They know the layout,” he whispered. “What?” My voice cracked under the pressure. “They’re not guessing. They’re walking like they’ve been here before.” That made everything worse. I took a step back, instinctively putting more space between me and the hallway that led to the rest of the house. My mind raced, trying to remember every detail, every time I had left a door open, every person I had ever trusted enough to let in. Nothing felt safe anymore. The footsteps got closer. A shadow passed across the wall near the kitchen entrance. I gasped softly, my hand flying to my mouth before I could stop myself. He turned immediately, his eyes locking onto mine, sharp and warning. “Don’t make a sound.” Too late. The footsteps stopped. Right outside the kitchen. Silence fell again, thick and heavy, pressing against my ears until it almost hurt. They heard me. Of course they did. My heart pounded so loudly I was sure it would give us away completely. Every second stretched longer than it should, the tension building until it felt like something had to snap. Then— A voice. Low. Controlled. Too calm. “I know you’re in there.” My stomach twisted violently. That voice… it wasn’t the same one from the door. This was someone else. Which meant— There was more than one. I felt my knees weaken slightly, panic rising fast, but before I could lose control, his hand found mine again, gripping it tighter this time. Not just to pull me, but to ground me. “Listen to me,” he whispered quickly, his voice barely audible. “When I say run, you don’t look back. You don’t stop. You don’t wait for me.” My eyes widened instantly. “No.” “You don’t have a choice.” “I’m not leaving you,” I whispered harshly, fear mixing with something stronger now. His grip tightened. “This isn’t about that.” “Then what is it about?” I demanded quietly, my voice shaking. “Because right now, it feels like you’re about to do something stupid.” A faint sound came from the hallway. A step closer. We were out of time. He leaned in slightly, his voice dropping even lower, urgent now. “It’s about keeping you alive.” Before I could respond, before I could argue, before I could even think— A figure appeared at the kitchen entrance. Tall. Still. Watching. Everything inside me froze. I couldn’t see their face clearly, just the outline, the presence, the way they stood there like they already owned the space. “Found you,” the voice said softly. Time stopped. My grip on his hand tightened without thinking, my entire body locked in place as fear took over completely. This wasn’t a situation anymore. This was real danger, standing right in front of us. And then— He moved. Fast. Too fast for me to react. “Run!” he shouted. Everything exploded into motion. He shoved me toward the back door, his body turning toward the figure without hesitation, like he had already made his decision before I even realized what was happening. “No!” I cried out, but my feet were already moving, my body reacting to the force of his push and the fear flooding through me. Behind me, I heard movement. Struggle. A sharp sound, like something hitting the wall. My heart broke and raced at the same time, every instinct screaming at me to turn back, to not leave him, to not run away like this. But his voice echoed in my head. Don’t look back. I reached the door, my hands shaking as I grabbed it, pulling it open into the night. The cold air hit me again, but this time it didn’t feel like relief. It felt like stepping into the unknown. I hesitated. Just for a second. And in that second— I heard something that made my blood run cold. A voice. From outside. Right behind me. “You’re not going anywhere.” My entire body went still. Slowly… I turned around.
