Chapter 14: He Didn’t Let It Go

885 Words
He just stared at me like he was seeing a version of me he didn’t recognize, and for a moment, I almost felt powerful. Almost. But then his expression changed, and that was when I knew this wasn’t over—not even close. The way he looked at me shifted from surprise to something darker, something familiar, something that used to keep me awake at night questioning myself. I hated that look. I hated that I still understood it. “You’ve changed,” he said slowly, his voice no longer calm but edged with something sharp. “I had to,” I replied, holding his gaze even though my heart was beating too fast. “You gave me no choice.” He stepped closer, and this time I forced myself not to move back. Not again. Not for him. Not anymore. “That’s not how I remember it,” he said, his tone low, almost like a warning. “Of course you don’t,” I said. “Because you never had to feel what I felt.” For a second, something flickered across his face—anger, maybe, or frustration—but it disappeared just as quickly as it came. “You think this is about feelings?” he asked. “You think you just get to walk away and that’s it?” “I didn’t just walk away,” I said, my voice tightening. “I survived you.” That hit him harder than anything else I had said. I saw it in the way his jaw clenched, in the way his eyes darkened. Behind me, I could feel Daniel’s presence—quiet, steady, not interrupting, not pushing—but there. And somehow, that made me stronger. “You’re standing here like you’ve won something,” my ex continued, his voice rising slightly. “Like you’re better now.” “I am better now,” I said, without hesitation. Silence fell between us, thick and heavy. People around us had started to notice, but I didn’t care. This moment had been waiting for me, whether I wanted it or not. He let out a short, bitter laugh. “You really believe that?” “I know it,” I said. Another pause. Longer this time. Then his eyes shifted slightly past me, landing on Daniel. “So this is why?” he asked. “You replaced me?” Before I could respond, Daniel finally spoke, his voice calm but firm. “She didn’t replace you. She chose herself.” That did it. The tension snapped. My ex took a step forward, his patience clearly gone now. “Stay out of this,” he said sharply. “I will,” Daniel replied, unbothered. “The moment you start respecting her.” The two of them stood there for a second, the air between them tight with something that could easily turn into more. My heart pounded, not from fear this time, but from the weight of everything happening at once. “See, this is your problem,” my ex said, looking back at me. “You always needed someone to speak for you.” “No,” I said quietly. “I needed someone who didn’t try to control me.” That shut him up. For the first time since he walked in, he didn’t have an immediate response. And that silence told me everything I needed to know. But then— His phone buzzed. He glanced at it quickly, and something in his expression changed again. Not anger this time. Not ego. Something else. Something… uneasy. He looked back at me, and for a brief second, I saw something I had never seen before. Uncertainty. “This isn’t over,” he said again, but this time it didn’t sound as confident. “It is for me,” I replied. He held my gaze for a few seconds longer, like he was trying to decide something, like he was holding back words he wasn’t ready to say. Then without another word, he turned and walked out. Again. But this time… it felt different. Like he hadn’t come just to see me. Like there was something else. Something he wasn’t telling me. The door closed behind him, and the noise in the café slowly returned, but I still felt frozen in place. “What was that?” I whispered, more to myself than anyone else. Daniel stepped closer, not too close, just enough. “That didn’t look like someone who came just to argue.” I swallowed. “Yeah… I know.” Because deep down, I felt it too. That tension. That shift. That moment when he looked at his phone. Something was wrong. And for some reason… I had a feeling it was about to involve me. I closed my eyes for a second, trying to steady myself, but it didn’t work. Nothing felt steady anymore. “Hey,” Daniel said softly. I opened my eyes. “You’re okay,” he continued. “Whatever this is… we’ll handle it.” We. That word again. And this time… I didn’t push it away. But something in my chest still wouldn’t settle. Because if tonight taught me anything… It was that my past wasn’t done with me. And next time— It might not just be words.
