Chapter 15: It Wasn’t Just About Me

954 Words
The ride home felt wrong in a way I couldn’t explain, like something invisible had shifted and the world hadn’t caught up yet. I sat by the window, watching streetlights blur past, but my mind wasn’t there. It was stuck in that moment at the café, replaying it over and over again, not the shouting, not the tension, but that small detail that refused to leave me alone. The way he looked at his phone. The way his expression changed for just a second. That wasn’t anger. That wasn’t jealousy. That was fear, and I had known him long enough to understand the difference. He wasn’t scared of losing me. He was scared of something else, something bigger, something I wasn’t supposed to notice. By the time I got home, my chest felt tight, like I had been holding my breath for too long. I stepped inside, closed the door behind me, and leaned against it, letting the silence wrap around me. Usually, silence helped me think, helped me calm down, but tonight it only made everything louder. My thoughts wouldn’t stop racing. Questions I didn’t have answers to kept piling up, and the more I tried to ignore them, the stronger they became. I dropped my bag on the floor and walked further into the room, my steps slow, uncertain, like I was walking into something I couldn’t see yet. Then my phone buzzed. I froze. For a second, I just stared at it, my heart beating faster for no reason I could justify. Maybe it was Daniel checking on me like he said he would. Maybe it was something normal, something harmless. But deep down, I already knew it wasn’t going to be that simple. I picked it up anyway, my fingers hesitating just before I unlocked it, like some part of me was trying to protect me from whatever I was about to see. Unknown Number. My stomach dropped. I opened the message slowly, almost unwillingly, and the moment I read it, everything inside me went cold. “I told you to stay away.” That was it. No name. No explanation. Just those five words, sitting there like a warning that came too late. My mind immediately started connecting things I didn’t want to connect. The café. The look on his face. The tension in his voice. The way everything suddenly felt off. This wasn’t random. This wasn’t a mistake. This was connected, and somehow, I was right in the middle of it. My fingers tightened around the phone as another message came in before I could even process the first one. “You don’t understand what you’re getting into.” I shook my head, taking a step back like distance could somehow change what I was seeing. My breathing became uneven, my thoughts slipping out of control. This wasn’t about love anymore. This wasn’t about heartbreak or trust or second chances. This was something else entirely, something darker, something I hadn’t signed up for. And the worst part was, I didn’t know who it was from. Was it him? Was it someone connected to him? Or was it something he had been trying to protect me from all along? Suddenly, every memory felt different. Every moment I thought I understood now felt like a lie I had been comfortable believing. I ran a hand through my hair, pacing the room, trying to think, trying to make sense of it, but nothing fit together the way it should. The pieces were there, but the picture they formed was something I didn’t recognize. Then my phone rang. I looked down at the screen, my heart pounding so hard it felt like it might break through my chest. It was him. For a second, I considered not answering. Maybe that would be safer. Maybe that would give me time to think, time to breathe, time to figure out what was happening before I got pulled in any deeper. But something told me it was already too late for that. Whatever this was, I was already involved. So I answered. “Hello?” My voice came out quieter than I expected. There was a pause on the other end, but it wasn’t empty. I could hear his breathing, uneven, like he had been running or like something had shaken him more than he wanted to admit. “Listen to me carefully,” he said, his voice low and serious in a way I had never heard before. “Whatever you do, don’t trust anyone right now.” My grip on the phone tightened. “What are you talking about?” “I’m serious,” he continued, ignoring my question completely. “If anyone contacts you, if anyone tries to get close to you, you need to stay away.” A chill ran down my spine. “You’re scaring me.” “Good,” he said, and that one word hit harder than anything else. “Because you should be.” My heart stopped for a second. “What is going on?” Another pause, longer this time, heavier. When he finally spoke again, his voice had dropped even lower, like he didn’t want anyone else to hear him. “This was never just about us.” Everything inside me went still. “What does that mean?” I asked, barely above a whisper. “It means,” he said slowly, “you were never supposed to be involved in this.” Before I could respond, before I could ask another question, before I could even breathe properly— The call ended. And just like that, I was alone again. But this time, the silence didn’t feel empty. It felt like something was coming.
