Chapter 12: The Way He Looked at Me

1008 Words
I wasn’t expecting to see him again. Not that soon. Not like that. The air that evening felt different—heavy, like something was about to happen. I had gone out just to clear my head. No makeup. No effort. Just me, trying to breathe in a world that still felt too tight around my chest. The café was quiet, soft music playing in the background, people minding their business. And for once… so was I. Until— “Is this seat taken?” My heart stopped. That voice. Calm. Deep. Familiar in a way that made my chest tighten. I looked up slowly. And there he was. Him. For a second, I couldn’t speak. Not because I didn’t have words… But because I wasn’t ready for the way he looked at me. Like he already knew me. Like he had been waiting. “You can say no,” he added, a faint smile playing on his lips as he pulled the chair slightly. I blinked, forcing myself back into the moment. “It’s… free,” I said quietly. Why did my voice sound like that? Soft. Careful. Almost unsure. He sat down like he belonged there. Like this wasn’t the first time. Like this wasn’t… strange. “You come here often?” he asked. Simple question. But something about the way he said it made it feel like he wasn’t just asking about the café. I looked down at my cup. “Sometimes.” A pause. Not awkward. Just… full. “I’ve seen you before.” My fingers tightened slightly around the cup. That made me look up again. “You have?” He nodded once. “Yeah.” Another pause. Then— “You always sit alone.” That hit deeper than it should have. I tried to laugh it off, but it came out quieter than I expected. “I like my space.” “Or you’re protecting it.” My breath caught. Who was this man? And why did it feel like he could see through everything I didn’t say? “I don’t even know your name,” I said, trying to regain control of the moment. He leaned back slightly, studying me. Not in a way that made me uncomfortable… But in a way that made me feel… exposed. “Daniel.” Daniel. The name settled in my mind like it had always been there. “I’m—” “I know.” I froze. “You… know?” He nodded again, calm as ever. “Yeah.” A small pause. “I heard someone call your name last time.” Relief should’ve come. But it didn’t. Because something about him still felt… intentional. Like nothing about this meeting was random. “Do you always notice people like that?” I asked. “Not people,” he said softly. His eyes held mine. “Just you.” My heart betrayed me. Again. Silence fell between us, but it wasn’t empty. It was loud. Too loud. Filled with questions I didn’t know how to ask. “You don’t talk much,” he said after a while. “I talk enough.” “Not when it matters.” That one… That one went straight through me. “You don’t even know me,” I whispered. He leaned forward slightly. And for the first time… I felt it. That shift. That pull. “I think I do,” he said quietly. Dangerous words. The kind that sound soft… but carry weight. Before I could respond— My phone buzzed. Loud. Sharp. Breaking everything. I looked down. And my stomach dropped. A name I thought I had buried. A name I promised myself I wouldn’t respond to again. A name that once had control over my heart. Him. Daniel noticed. Of course he did. His eyes didn’t leave my face. “What is it?” I swallowed. “It’s nothing.” Lie. “Doesn’t look like nothing.” My fingers hovered over the screen. My heart started racing again—but not in the same way. Not soft. Not curious. This one felt like the past reaching out… trying to pull me back. “Are you going to answer it?” Daniel asked. I didn’t respond. Because I didn’t know. The phone kept vibrating. Again. And again. And again. Like it wasn’t going to stop. Like he wasn’t going to stop. Daniel’s voice came softer this time. “Whoever it is… they don’t look like peace.” That word. Peace. I slowly looked up at him. And for the first time since he sat down— I saw something different in his eyes. Not just calm. Not just curiosity. Concern. And that scared me more than anything. Because I wasn’t used to someone caring like that. Not without wanting something in return. The phone stopped. Silence. But the tension stayed. Then— A message came in. I looked down. Hesitated. Opened it. And the moment I read it… Everything inside me dropped. “I saw you today.” My heart started pounding. Fast. Uneven. Wrong. ⸻ I looked around instinctively. The café. The people. The door. The windows. ⸻ “Hey,” Daniel’s voice cut in, grounding me. “What happened?” ⸻ I couldn’t answer. Not yet. Because one thought kept repeating in my head— If he saw me… Then that means— I wasn’t as far from my past as I thought. I slowly looked back at Daniel. And for the first time… I didn’t feel in control of my life anymore. “I think…” I whispered, “…this isn’t over.” Daniel didn’t panic. Didn’t rush. Didn’t overreact. He just looked at me. Steady. Unshaken. And said— “Then we don’t run from it.” My breath caught. “We face it.” And somehow… That scared me. But also— For the first time— It felt like I wouldn’t have to face it alone. But I didn’t know yet… That seeing him again tonight… was going to change everything.
