Chapter 18: Whispers of a Friend

The footsteps in the trees grew louder. Vaelor stood like a wall in front of me. His body stayed tense and his golden eyes scanned the mist. I held my breath. Then Lira stepped out again. She moved slowly with her hands raised. “Sera, please,” she said softly. “I just want to talk. I came alone. I slipped away from the search party because I was worried about you.”

Lira looked disappointed but she smiled anyway. “I understand. Just know I am here for you. I will come back tomorrow if I can. Please think about it.” She gave me one last look then turned and disappeared into the trees.

Vaelor did not wait. The moment she was gone he scooped me up like I weighed nothing. “Enough talk,” he growled. “Now I remind this soft body who it belongs to.”
