Chapter 10: The Second Target

1787 Words
"Let the games begin, Lord Sterling," Richter whispered to the darkness, his voice completely devoid of human warmth. "Let us see how long the proud Vanya clan survives when their darkest secrets are delivered directly to the butcher's table." The heavy velvet curtains of the Grand High-Society Opera House draped down in deep crimson folds, absorbing the ambient chatter of Aethelgard's finest citizens. Gold leaf coated the sweeping balconies, gleaming under the massive crystal chandeliers that hung from the frescoed ceiling. The air in the upper tiers was thick with the scent of expensive imported perfumes, burning beeswax, and the underlying metallic tang of the city's steam-powered heating vents. Below the private boxes, the orchestra tuned their cellos and violins, producing a low, undulating drone that resonated through the floorboards. Richter sat perfectly still on a small, uncomfortable wooden stool positioned directly behind Ghina's plush leather armchair. He had re-assumed his submissive posture, his shoulders slumped forward and his head bowed just enough to signify his lower status. His tattered cloak had been replaced by a cheap, poorly fitted valet uniform, a deliberate choice to ensure he looked completely out of place next to his wife's extravagant attire. Ghina sat prominently at the front of the box, her neck adorned with glittering sapphires, her fingers tapping impatiently against the polished mahogany railing. "Sit up straight, you pathetic excuse for a man," Ghina hissed without turning her head, her voice sharp and dripping with casual cruelty. "If the other oligarch families see you slouching like a sick dog in my presence, they will think the Galileo Corporation is growing weak. You are here to hold my opera glasses and keep your mouth shut." "Of course, my beautiful star," Richter murmured meekly, forcing a slight tremor into his voice. "I only wish to ensure that your view remains entirely unobstructed by my clumsy presence." Ghina scoffed, waving her fan aggressively to dismiss his words. "Your very existence is a clumsy presence. Just make sure you do not spill the sparkling water when the first act begins. My father only let this ridiculous marriage arrangement stand because he thinks you are too stupid to hide anything from us." Richter kept his gaze fixed on the floorboards, his face a perfect picture of wounded compliance, but beneath his eyelashes, his pupils scanned the surrounding luxury boxes with lethal precision. He did not care about Ghina's insults; they were merely the background noise necessary to maintain his grand illusion. His true focus was directed toward the central tier of the opera house, specifically the private box belonging to the master metalworkers of the city. There, draped in dark silks and heavy silver jewelry, sat Lady Beatrice. The wealthy widow was legendary within Aethelgard's high society, not just for her immense fortune, but for her legendary materialism and her absolute control over the city's largest iron ore factories. She was a woman who valued raw power and tangible assets above all else, possessing a fierce reputation for chewing up and spitting out any business partner who showed the slightest hint of defiance. As Richter watched from the shadows of Ghina's box, he noticed Beatrice looking through her silver-plated opera glasses, her sharp eyes scanning the auditorium until they locked directly onto him. Richter deliberately chose that exact moment to let his wooden staff slip from his hand. It clattered loudly against the floor, drawing a sharp glare from Ghina. Richter gasped in feigned panic, instantly dropping to his knees to retrieve it, his movements awkward and submissive. He looked up toward Beatrice's box just as he grabbed the staff, allowing her to see the look of profound, helpless misery on his face. He made sure his expression conveyed the perfect image of a gentle, broken soul trapped beneath the heel of a tyrannical woman. Beatrice lowered her opera glasses, a slow, calculating smile spreading across her painted lips. Richter could see the sudden spark of intense interest in her eyes. To a woman like Beatrice, who spent her days fighting aggressive union leaders and arrogant male executives, a wealthy but utterly weak and pliable young man was the ultimate prize. She did not want a strong partner who would challenge her authority; she wanted a handsome, submissive husband she could easily dominate while taking control of whatever hidden assets his father had left behind. The house lights began to dim, and the heavy thrum of the steam organ signaled the start of the performance. The operatic soprano took the stage, her high, piercing voice filling the grand hall with a dramatic tale of betrayal and conquest. Ghina immediately leaned forward, entirely captivated by the performance and completely ignoring the man sitting in her shadow. Richter remained perfectly still in the dim light, tracking the movement of a figure moving silently through the corridor outside their private box. The heavy brass door handle turned with a faint click. A tall manservant wearing the distinct silver livery of the Beatrice estate stepped into the shadows of the box, his movements completely silent. Ghina did not even glance backward, her attention entirely locked onto the stage. The manservant stepped closer to Richter, his face completely expressionless. Without uttering a single word, the servant reached down and subtly slipped a heavy, wax-sealed envelope directly into the deep pocket of Richter's valet uniform. Richter did not move, nor did he look up, keeping his hands clasped tightly in his lap as if he were entirely unaware of the intrusion. The servant nodded once, a gesture of absolute discretion, before melting back into the darkness of the corridor. Richter waited for several minutes, ensuring Ghina was completely absorbed in the dramatic crescendo of the opera before he allowed his fingers to slide into his pocket. He broke the heavy wax seal with his thumbnail, unfolding the expensive parchment paper. The elegant, sharp handwriting belonged to Lady Beatrice herself, the text containing an explicit invitation to meet her privately in her luxury box during the intermission, explicitly noting that Ghina must remain entirely unaware of the encounter. A cold, invisible smile touched the corners of Richter's lips in the darkness. The trap had been set, the bait had been taken, and the second target was already reaching out to place her neck into his invisible noose. He carefully folded the letter and tucked it away, his mind already calculating the exact words he would use to strip the iron widow of her empire. The first act concluded with a thunderous roar of applause, the massive chandeliers slowly rising in brightness as the intermission began. Ghina stood up immediately, brushing a speck of dust from her sapphire necklace. "I am going to the grand lounge to speak with the Magistrate's daughters," Ghina commanded, looking down at Richter with utter disdain. "Stay here and guard my velvet cloak. If I return and find a single thread out of place, I will have the guards lock you in the steam chambers for the night." "I will protect it with my life, Ghina," Richter replied, bowing his head so low his forehead almost touched his knees. "Please enjoy your time with the high ladies." The moment Ghina stepped out of the box and vanished into the bustling crowd of the main lounge, Richter's submissive posture vanished. He stood up straight, his spine popping as he adjusted the fit of his valet uniform. He stepped out of the box, moving through the secondary service corridors with the quiet, ghost-like efficiency of a seasoned hunter. He arrived at the entrance of Lady Beatrice's private luxury box within minutes. The silver-liveried guard outside simply nodded and opened the door, allowing Richter to step into an opulent chamber filled with the rich scent of fine tobacco and expensive brandy. Lady Beatrice sat alone on a velvet chaise lounge, a crystal glass held casually between her fingers. She looked up, her eyes tracing his figure with an aggressive, proprietary hunger. "So, the little mouse manages to escape his cage for a few brief moments," Beatrice murmured, her voice deep, smooth, and full of dominant confidence. "Tell me, Richter, does your arrogant wife always treat her most valuable assets with such public disrespect?" Richter allowed his shoulders to drop slightly, re-introducing a delicate touch of vulnerability into his eyes as he took a cautious step forward. "A man in my position learns to accept whatever crumbs of dignity he is thrown, Lady Beatrice. I am merely a scrapper who found himself in a nest of hawks." "You are far more than a scrapper, my dear," Beatrice said, standing up and walking toward him, the silver chains on her gown clinking softly. "You possess the keys to the southern trade manifests, yet you allow that loud-mouthed girl to treat you like a common dog. A man with your potential needs a real woman to guide his hand, someone who understands the true value of iron and blood." Richter looked down at her polished silver rings, his heart rate remaining perfectly calm while his face painted an exquisite portrait of a man desperately seeking a savior. "Ghina has the backing of the Galileo Corporation. If I ever tried to manage my father's factories on my own, she would crush me within a day. I am simply not strong enough to fight them." "Then do not fight them alone," Beatrice whispered, stepping remarkably close, her breath warm against his chin as she looked down at him with supreme satisfaction. "Marry me in the dark, Richter, and my iron foundries will provide the shield you need to tear Galileo's monopoly to shreds." Richter forced his breath to hitch, his eyes widening in a perfect display of stunned, submissive gratitude. He knew that her arrogance was absolute, and that she truly believed she had just discovered the perfect puppet to expand her manufacturing empire. "You... you would truly offer me such protection, my lady?" Richter stammered, his left hand trembling slightly as he reached out toward her. "But Ghina... if she discovers our connection, she will ruin us both." Beatrice let out a sharp, mocking laugh, her fingers gripping his chin with a firm, dominant pressure that made her belief in her own control absolute. "Let the foolish girl play with her sapphires while we take everything she owns," Lady Beatrice sneered, her eyes flashing with pure, unadulterated greed. "Bring your father's blueprints to my private office tomorrow morning, and I will show you how a true queen builds an empire out of broken men."
