CHAPTER 11: THE SECRET PAST

892 Words
Elara sat stiffly in the cold metal chair, the rough leather straps digging into her wrists, but she wouldn't show any sign of weakness. Every muscle in her body was tight, her breath steady even though a dull ache was creeping into her bones. The dim light in the room cast long shadows that moved along the cold walls, and the silence around her felt like a living thing, pressing in on her. The heavy steel door groaned open, breaking the quiet. The man who had captured her stepped inside, his face calm but his eyes full of something deeper-regret, or maybe sorrow. For a moment, they just looked at each other, two enemies tied together by secrets neither was ready to share. He finally spoke, his voice quiet and steady. "You want to know why music is forbidden in Seren, don't you?" Elara narrowed her eyes but said nothing. The question hung in the air, thick and suffocating, more than the chains that bound her. The man sighed, a sound full of years of regret. "Seren wasn't always a city of silence. There was a time when music filled every corner of this place-when the streets were alive with melodies, and every heartbeat followed the rhythm of song." His gaze softened as he remembered. "Music was the lifeblood of Seren. It brought people together, creating invisible threads of connection and hope. Children sang in the streets, lovers whispered ballads under the moonlight, and the air itself seemed to shimmer with sound." Elara's heart stirred at the picture he painted, a small flicker of warmth lighting up inside her chest. "But that all changed," he continued, his voice dropping to a whisper. Suddenly, the room around them seemed to disappear, the cold stone walls melting away. Elara blinked, her senses overwhelmed as the world shifted. She found herself standing in the middle of Seren-but not the silent, empty city she knew. This Seren was alive and glowing, bathed in golden sunlight. The air was filled with music: violins creating delicate harmonies, flutes singing through the breeze, drums beating like the heartbeat of the earth. Laughter came from nearby streets, and people danced freely, their faces lit with joy and freedom. In the center of the city, a big stage was set up. The top musicians from everywhere came together, holding their instruments, ready to play a special music that would bring people together and start a new time of peace. Elara stopped breathing when the orchestra started playing. The music grew, like a strong wave of sound that lifted everyone's mood. The notes looked bright, full of strength and beauty. But then something changed. The melody became louder and stronger, as if the music had taken on a life of its own. The sound spread out, growing into a force that went beyond just harmony. Elara felt it deep inside her bones-a sudden, scary power that roared through the city like a storm. Glass shattered far away, sharp and painful. Buildings shook and cracked, their strong walls groaning under the invisible attack. The happy laughter turned into screams of fear as the Resonance-the powerful sound wave-rushed through the streets. Chaos broke out. People ran around without thinking, trying to get away from the invisible storm. Elara's chest felt tight. The destruction was so bad-walls fell down, windows exploded into pieces, and the music that once brought hope now caused ruin. Elara's eyes burned with new determination. "Then I won't let her fight be in vain." The man looked at her with a mix of respect and worry. "Be careful, Elara. The Council has a strong hold, and the silence they force on the city is deep. They will do anything to keep it quiet." Elara's voice was calm, full of resolve. "Then I will be the one to end that silence." The man nodded, a small spark of hope in his eyes. "You carry more than music, Elara. You carry the city's future." As he turned to leave, Elara whispered to herself, "I will bring back the sound. No matter the cost." The vision quickly disappeared, and the cold walls of the room returned. The man's voice was very quiet. "That day changed everything. The Resonance Incident destroyed not just the city's buildings, but also its hope. Music, which was once a source of happiness, became a tool of destruction." Elara gripped her fists tightly. "How could something so beautiful turn so dangerous?" "The power of music was never meant to be used carelessly," the man said seriously. "The Council, scared of more disaster, took control. They banned music completely-saying it was dangerous and not allowed." He moved closer, his eyes darkening. "They created the Silencers, harsh enforcers who punished anyone who played a note or even hummed a song." Elara's voice shook as she asked the question that was eating at her. "What about my mother? She believed in the real power of music." The man's face softened. "Your mother... she was a bright light during those dark days. One of the last people who believed music was a gift, not a curse. She tried to keep the magic-the hope-that music could bring." He paused. "After the Resonance, she disappeared. Some say she was silenced forever. Others think she went into hiding, waiting for the day when music might come back."
