Irving E. Cox, Jr. (circa 1954).Irving England Cox, Jr. (1917-2001) was born in Philadelphia, where he attended Quaker schools and had a vigorous, classical education. The Great Depression—which struck when he was 12— sent his family moving across country, following work. As a result, he attended many different public schools in the South, the Midwest, and the far west.
He wrote a bio in Imagination magazine in 1955 that said, in part:
ImaginationOurs, granted, was no easy growing up time, yet the problems which bedeviled our generation were small beside the tensions which the children of today must face. When I compare the two periods, I marvel not that we have so many neurotic breakdowns but that so many of us have found real stability.
