The Secret Life
The doctor's office felt smaller than before.
As though the walls themselves were closing in around Elena.
Her hands rested protectively on her stomach.
She was still trying to process the news.
A baby.
Her baby.
For years, Adrian had made it clear he never wanted children with her.
He had insisted she take precautions.
He had never spoken about a future family.
Never spoken about names, birthdays, or little footsteps running through the halls.
Children simply weren't part of the future he imagined.
At least not with her.
And now she was carrying his child.
The irony felt almost cruel.
The doctor looked concerned.
"Mrs. Hart, are you sure you're alright?"
Elena forced a nod.
"I'm fine."
It was a lie.
She was terrified.
Mira sat beside her and squeezed her hand.
The doctor cleared his throat.
"The pregnancy appears stable, but you'll need plenty of rest."
Elena barely heard him.
Her mind was elsewhere.
On Adrian.
Always Adrian.
Finally, she looked directly at the doctor.
"Please."
The word came out as a whisper.
"Don't tell my husband."
The doctor frowned.
"Mrs. Hart, he's your husband."
"I know."
"He has a right to know."
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"No."
The answer came quickly.
Firmly.
Unexpectedly.
Even Mira looked surprised.
The doctor remained silent.
Elena swallowed hard.
Then she spoke the truth she rarely admitted out loud.
"I'm afraid of him."
The room became still.
The doctor stared at her.
Mira lowered her eyes sadly.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then the doctor slowly nodded.
"I understand."
Relief flooded through Elena.
"Thank you."
The doctor gave her a sympathetic smile.
"Your medical information remains confidential."
Elena felt like crying again.
This time from gratitude.
---
Later that evening, Mira stayed beside her hospital bed.
The room was quiet except for the steady beeping of nearby machines.
Elena stared out the window.
The city lights sparkled in the distance.
"I don't know what to do."
Mira looked at her.
"About the baby?"
Elena nodded.
"I've never been responsible for someone else's life before."
Mira smiled softly.
"You'll be amazing."
Elena laughed weakly.
"What makes you so sure?"
"Because you're you."
Mira's answer was simple.
But it warmed Elena's heart.
"You spent your entire life taking care of other people."
Mira continued.
"You cared for children at the orphanage."
She counted on her fingers.
"You cared for me."
Another finger.
"You even spent six years caring for a man who didn't deserve it."
A third finger.
"Trust me. Loving this baby will be the easiest thing you've ever done."
Fresh tears filled Elena's eyes.
This time they weren't painful.
They were hopeful.
A feeling she hadn't experienced in years.
---
An hour later, her phone rang.
Mira glanced at the screen.
Her face immediately darkened.
"Adrian."
Elena's stomach dropped.
The fear returned instantly.
"Answer it."
Mira hesitated.
Then handed her the phone.
Elena pressed the answer button.
"Hello?"
Adrian's voice came through immediately.
"Where are you?"
No concern.
No worry.
No kindness.
Just annoyance.
"I'm at the hospital."
Silence.
Then:
"Why?"
The question stunned her.
Because she had already told him she wasn't feeling well.
But apparently he hadn't cared enough to remember.
"I'm getting treatment."
Another pause.
"When are you coming home?"
Not Are you okay?
Not What happened?
Not Do you need anything?
Just:
When are you coming home?
Elena closed her eyes briefly.
"The doctor wants to keep me overnight."
Adrian sighed heavily.
As though she were inconveniencing him.
"Fine."
The call ended.
Just like that.
No goodbye.
Nothing.
Mira looked furious.
"I swear, one day..."
Elena shook her head.
"Don't."
But even she sounded tired.
Very tired.
---
The following morning, Elena was eating breakfast when the hospital room door opened.
And Adrian walked in.
Immediately, the atmosphere changed.
His expensive suit looked perfect.
His expression didn't.
He looked irritated.
Not concerned.
Not relieved.
Irritated.
Mira, who had arrived early that morning, stood up instantly.
"What are you doing here?"
Adrian ignored her.
His eyes remained on Elena.
"You look fine."
Elena felt her chest tighten.
Mira folded her arms.
"That's the first thing you're going to say?"
Adrian finally looked at her.
"And you're still here."
The dislike between them was immediate.
Powerful.
Unavoidable.
Mira stepped forward.
"You should be thanking God she's alive."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"And you should mind your own business."
Elena closed her eyes.
Not again.
The arguing had begun.
And it was only getting worse.
Mira pointed toward him.
"Do you even care what happened to her?"
"She's alive, isn't she?"
The answer made Mira gasp.
Elena's heart broke a little more.
Because somehow, despite everything...
Part of her had still hoped he cared.
Just a little.
But his words destroyed that hope.
Mira shook her head in disbelief.
"I don't know how she stays with you."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"And I don't know why you keep interfering in my marriage."
Their voices grew louder.
The tension thickened.
And all the while, Elena sat silently in bed.
One hand resting on her stomach.
Protecting the tiny secret growing inside her.
A secret neither of them knew.
A secret that could change everything.
And as she watched Adrian and Mira argue, one thought echoed inside her mind:
My baby will never grow up feeling unwanted.
Because no matter what happened next...
No matter how difficult the future became...
She had already decided one thing.
She would protect this child.
Even if it meant protecting the baby from its own father.
