Chapter Six

A House Without Freedom The ride home from the party was silent. Adrian sat beside Elena in the back seat of the car, staring out the window. His silence frightened her more than shouting ever could. When Adrian shouted, at least she knew what he was feeling. When he was silent, she never knew what might happen next. The city lights flashed past as the car moved through the darkness. Elena kept her hands folded tightly in her lap. Neither of them spoke. Not once. The moment they arrived home, Adrian climbed out of the car and walked inside without waiting for her. Elena followed. Her stomach twisted into knots. She knew something was coming. The front door closed behind them. The servants immediately disappeared from sight. Everyone in the house recognized the warning signs. Adrian loosened his tie. Slowly. Dangerously. Then he turned around. "Who is he?" Elena blinked. "Who?" His eyes darkened. "The man from the balcony." "Daniel?" Adrian's jaw tightened. The fact that she remembered his name seemed to anger him even more. "How long have you known him?" "I met him tonight." Adrian laughed humorlessly. "You expect me to believe that?" "It's true." He stepped closer. "What did he want?" Elena shook her head. "Nothing." "What were you talking about?" "Just the party." His stare never left her face. As though he was searching for a lie. Finally, he scoffed. "I don't want you talking to him again." Elena felt frustration rise inside her. A rare feeling. A dangerous feeling. "He spoke to me for less than five minutes." "I don't care." His voice echoed through the hall. "I don't want you around him." The frustration vanished. Fear replaced it. Just like always. Adrian pointed toward the staircase. "Go to your room." The words felt less like a request and more like an order. Elena quietly obeyed. Because fighting never changed anything. It only made things worse. The following morning, things became even worse. Elena woke up to discover her phone missing. Again. She searched everywhere. The nightstand. The dresser. Her purse. Nothing. Finally she walked downstairs. Adrian sat at the breakfast table reading a newspaper. "My phone is gone." Without looking up, he replied, "I have it." Elena froze. "Why?" Now he looked at her. "Because I said so." The answer made her chest ache. She wasn't a child. Yet he treated her like one. "You can't just take my phone." "Watch me." His expression remained calm. Cold. Unbothered. As though controlling her was the most natural thing in the world. Elena wanted to argue. Wanted to demand it back. Instead, she sat down quietly. Defeat tasted bitter. Days passed. Then weeks. And Adrian's control tightened further. He checked where she went. Who she spoke to. What she did. If she spent too long talking to a servant, he questioned her. If she wanted to visit a*****e, he refused. If she wanted fresh air, he assigned security to follow her. Little by little, her world became smaller. And smaller. And smaller. Until the mansion no longer felt like a home. It felt like a prison. One afternoon, Mira arrived unexpectedly. The moment Elena opened the door, her best friend frowned. "You look terrible." Elena attempted a smile. "I'm fine." Mira rolled her eyes. "You really need a new line." The two women sat together in Elena's room. For a while, they simply talked. About childhood memories. About movies. About anything except Adrian. But eventually, the conversation reached the subject neither could avoid. Mira folded her arms. "He's getting worse." Elena looked away. Mira continued. "He took your phone again." Elena nodded. "He won't let you leave the house." Another nod. "He treats you like property." Silence. Mira's eyes filled with frustration. "When are you going to admit this isn't normal?" Elena swallowed. Deep down, she already knew. But admitting it felt terrifying. Because if she admitted it... She might have to do something about it. And change was frightening. Even when change meant freedom. Mira reached across the bed and grabbed her hand. "Listen to me." Elena looked up. "If you ever decide to leave, you won't be alone." Tears filled Elena's eyes instantly. Mira squeezed her hand. "I mean it." Her voice softened. "You have me." The words wrapped around Elena's heart like a blanket. Warm. Safe. Certain. "You always say that." "Because it's true." Elena smiled sadly. "What would I do without you?" Mira grinned. "Probably end up marrying another idiot." For the first time all week, Elena laughed. A real laugh. Not forced. Not fake. The sound surprised both of them. Because it reminded Elena of someone she hadn't seen in a long time. Herself. That evening, after Mira left, Elena stood alone by her bedroom window. Outside, the sun was setting. The sky glowed orange and gold. Beautiful. Free. She watched birds flying across the horizon. No cages. No chains. No permission needed. Just freedom. A strange feeling stirred inside her chest. A feeling she hadn't felt in years. Not hope. Not yet. But something close. A question. A possibility. A tiny whisper asking: What if there is a life beyond this house? And for the first time, Elena didn't push the thought away. She allowed herself to imagine it. Just for a moment. A life where she could choose. A life where she could breathe. A life where she belonged to herself. Little did she know, that life was already growing inside her. And soon, everything would change.
