Chapter Five – Warnings

232 Words
The next morning, Korede’s phone buzzed again. Unknown Number: “You’re smarter than Gbenga was. But not smart enough to stop. Walk away, or we’ll finish what we started.” His chest tightened. Korede showed the message to Adaora after class. Her face went pale. “This is serious,” she whispered. “They’re watching us.” “I know,” Korede said. “And I’m not backing down.” That evening, while everyone was at dinner, Korede went to the back of the science block to clear his head. He paced behind the water tanks, thinking of what to do next. Suddenly, something slammed into him from behind. He hit the ground hard. A cloth bag went over his head. Hands grabbed his arms. Voices whispered harshly. “You should’ve shut up, Korede.” He kicked. Bit. Fought like his life depended on it—because it did. Then, suddenly, the hands vanished. Footsteps ran away. A whistle blew from somewhere. He pulled off the bag and gasped for air. Standing over him, shaking, was Adaora—holding a long metal pipe. “I followed you,” she said breathlessly. “I saw them grab you. I didn’t know what else to do.” Korede couldn’t speak. His ribs ached. But he looked at her—really looked. This girl wasn’t weak. Not anymore. And now, he owed her his life.
