Chapter 15

810 Words
Truths David stood frozen at the doorway, the air thick with tension and uncertainty as Emily stepped inside. The casual guise she wore was nothing but a mask for the turmoil she thrived on. Lena edged closer, her expression shifting from confusion to apprehension as she took in Emily’s presence. “David, is this a bad time?” Emily asked sweetly, but the false innocence in her tone sent a chill racing down his spine. “Absolutely, it is,” Lena replied firmly, stepping protectively in front of David. “What do you want, Emily?” “It’s nothing personal,” Emily said, feigning a nonchalant shrug. “I just thought we could have a little chat about your husband here.” Lena turned to David, disbelief flickering in her eyes. “What does she mean?” David’s heart raced as he tried to process the ominous implications. “Lena, I—” “Stop,” Emily interrupted, crossing her arms as she faced Lena with an unsettling smile. “Let’s just keep things civil. I’m not here to cause trouble—at least not intentionally.” “Then explain what you’re doing here,” Lena pressed, her voice unwavering, though David could hear the slight tremor beneath it. Emily’s gaze returned to David. “David, we had some unfinished business to discuss, and I didn't want to wait any longer.” “Unfinished business?” Lena echoed, her suspicion growing. “What are you talking about?” David swallowed hard, feeling the weight of confrontation settle on his shoulders. “Emily, I think you should just leave.” “Oh, but we both know I can’t do that,” Emily replied with false sweetness. “Not when I have something that belongs to you, dear friend.” “Enough!” David snapped, his patience thinning. “This isn’t a game, Emily. You don’t have any leverage here.” “Is that so?” Emily stepped closer, her smile stretching wider. “What if I told you I have evidence you’re not the dedicated husband you portray, David? Evidence that could hurt Lena and your family?” David felt the blood drain from his face as Lena’s eyes widened in shock. “What evidence?” Before he could respond, Lena turned sharply to him. “David, what is she talking about?” He could feel the room closing in on him. Emily’s threats were becoming a reality, and the truth he had been dreading to reveal was clawing its way to the surface. “Lena, listen—” “No! You don’t get to deflect this,” Lena insisted, her voice rising with the tempest of emotions swirling around them. “What’s going on?” “David,” Emily interrupted again, a victorious glint in her eyes. “If you’d like, I can share how the two of us became quite chummy while you were off creating your beautiful family.” “Shut up!” David shouted, fury bursting forth as he advanced toward Emily, almost completely losing his grip on the situation. “You’re crossing a line.” “Oh please, it’s rich you think I’m the problem here,” Emily retorted, waving a dismissive hand. “We both know someone is hiding something, and it isn’t me.” Lena’s attention turned back to David, fear and anger danced across her face. “What is happening, David? Are you hiding something from me? Speak up!” His heart raced; the way she was looking at him felt like a mirror reflecting all his fears—a painful reminder of the lies he had constructed. “Lena, I love you, but there are things you don’t know,” he began, his voice shaky. “Things? Like what?” she pressed, her voice rising sharply. “Just spit it out!” “Things that involve Sofia, and—” he hesitated, the weight of the name like a lead weight in his throat. “Things that Emily has tried to manipulate for her benefit.” The venom in Emily’s eyes intensified at his words. “You think you can turn this against me?” she spat, stepping forward as if challenging him. “You’ll regret this. People don’t forget, and I’ll make sure Lena knows the truth!” Lena looked between David and Emily, confusion morphing into betrayal. “What truth, David? Whatever it is, I deserve to hear it now!” David took a breath, forcing himself to dig deep for his courage. “I’ve spent time with Sofia,” he finally admitted, the confession tearing from him like a weight he’d carried too long. Lena’s expression shifted, hurt flashing across her face like lightning, briefly illuminating the depth of his deception. “Time? Are you saying you’ve been involved?” “Not involved,” he replied, desperation creeping into."
