Chapter 13

803 Words
Tension Rising The morning light streamed through the window as David sat still on the bed, the echoes of the previous night weighing heavily on his mind. A night marked by desperation and unspoken truths. Lena had pulled away, and each breath he took felt thick with the tension he had created. His phone buzzed, and he glanced down to see a message from Sofia: "Can we talk today? I need to know where we stand." Panic surged in his chest as he stared at the screen. He had hoped to keep the lines of communication open between them, but this felt different. The urgency in her message felt like a premonition of storm clouds gathering on the horizon. He replied: "Yes, let’s meet after lunch." After sending the message, David dragged himself off the bed, his heart echoing with guilt. He wandered into the kitchen where Lena was busy making breakfast for Chris, the sizzling of bacon clashing with the silence that hung between them. “Good morning, David,” Lena said, her voice cheerful, but a hint of tension lingered as her eyes flickered to meet his. She was trying to keep things normal, and he appreciated it, but the rift was palpable. “Morning,” he replied, grabbing a cup of coffee, his mind racing. Should he tell her about his plans to meet Sofia? The thought brought unease, knowing it could shatter the delicate facade they were maintaining. “Chris is excited for another family day,” Lena said, her smile brightening as she turned to him. “Maybe we could pick up a cake or some treats for later?” “Sure, sounds good,” he said absentmindedly, trying to focus on her words but failing as they set off for their day ahead. Later, as David prepared to leave for his meeting with Sofia, he found Lena standing by the door, a glimmer of hope in her eyes. “Hey, I was thinking we could take Chris to the local fair tonight! It’s been ages since we did something as a family. What do you think?” David’s heart tightened at the request. “That sounds great, Lena, but I might have to miss it. I have some… plans,” he said, hesitant as he tried to navigate the truth. Lena’s brow furrowed slightly, suspicion evident in her gaze. “Plans? What kind of plans? Is there something you’re not telling me?” He felt cornered, his words faltering. “Just a meeting, that’s all. I’ll join you guys later.” “David,” she pressed, her voice steady but tinged with an undercurrent of anxiety. “Are you sure you don’t want to talk about whatever this is? It all feels... off.” Before he could respond, her phone buzzed, pulling her attention away. It was Elizah. “I’ll be right back,” she said, quickly stepping into the other room. David seized the moment, bolting out of the house, his heart pounding as he grappled with the chaos swirling around him. At the café, Sofia was already settled at their usual table, an anxious expression crossing her features as David approached. He could see the tension in her posture; she was waiting for answers. “Thanks for meeting me,” he said, sliding into the chair opposite her. Sofia glanced at him, urgency in her voice. “David, I need clarity about us. I can’t keep waiting in limbo. If you want this, if you want me, then you have to be all in.” A thousand thoughts rushed through his mind, but he felt drawn to her intensity. “I do want you, Sofia. But everything is so tangled, and it’s hard to see a clear way forward.” “I’m not asking for perfection. Just honesty,” she said, her voice softening. "But Lena deserves to know everything. It's better for everyone involved." “It's not that simple. I don’t want to hurt her,” David replied, feeling the burden of the secret weighing him down. “It might hurt more if this continues. Emily has her eyes on you. She’d exploit any weakness she finds,” Sofia warned, her eyes searching his. “You know it’s a matter of time before she strikes.” David felt his throat tighten at the thought of Emily running rampant with the truth and how it would destroy everything—his family, his marriage, and the fleeting reality he had built with Sofia. “What am I supposed to do?” he asked, increasingly aware of the cold sweat forming at his brow. “Make a choice,” she urged. “You have to be the one to take control. Talk to Lena and figure out where you truly want to be.” He nodded, feeling.
