The door creaked open.
For a split second, no one moved.
Greg. Vanessa. Nora. All stared cluelessly at themselves.
Neither of them said a word.
Greg’s tie hung loosely around his neck while Vanessa stood far to close him. Her shirt was unbuttoned down to her bust area, while Greg had his hands wrapped around her waist.
Nora’s eyes moved slowly from Greg…
…to Vanessa…
…then back to Greg.
If the human ears had an infused stethoscope, it would hear how fast Nora's heart was beating.
The more she opened her mouth to speak, the less she had to say.
After seconds of staring at them.
The first word she could muffle out of her mouth was “Greg”?!
Tears gushed out of her eyes.
She pushed through the revolving doors and ran into the street.
Her legs moved before her thoughts.
Tyres ran violently on the road and then “Bang”.
A body flew several feet away from the car.
Everyone on the road hurriedly came to the accident scene.
Some screamed.
Some pulled out their phones to record.
Others stood frozen in shock.
“Oh my God!” Passengers said aloud.
Fortunately it wasn’t a hit and run, the driver immediately slammed his car door open and rushed toward her.
The moment he knelt beside her, his expression changed.
Goodness! He shouted in great dispare.
His jaw dropped instantly.
Blood gushed out of her body and her eyelids slowly began to meet. For a brief moment she caught the site of the man kneeling besides her then her eyes went completely closed.
Without wasting another second, the stranger carefully lifted her into his arms, placed her in the back seat of his car, and sped toward the nearest hospital.
The moment he drove into the hospital, he started shouting for help before he opened the car door.
Two nurses and an emergency attendant rushed outside with a stretcher.
Carefully, they lifted Nora out of the back seat.
Nora was immediately rushed the the emergency ward.
“ Her BP is dropping.”
“Move! Move!” These were the words the driver could her.
Unsettled by these words, he continued to pace to and from the reception.
Minutes later, a doctor in blue scrubs stepped out of the emergency room.
“Who brought the patient in?”
“I did.”
“Are you a relative?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
The doctor studied him briefly and said to him, “You look familiar”.
The driver gave no response but instead forced out a little smile.
Please, Doctor, what is the situation of things.
“She’s suffered significant blood loss. Thankfully, we got her here in time. We’re stabilizing her now, but she’ll need a CT scan, medications, and a few emergency procedures to rule out any internal injuries.”
So please make a deposit before we can commence the treatment.
And please, if possible, reach out to a family member of hers, it is possible we meet them.
“Where do I pay?”
The cashier pointed toward the billing office.
“Right over there, sir.”
“I’ll take care of everything.”
Within minutes, the payment had been completed.
When the cashier handed him the receipt, she smiled politely.
“All her bills have been covered, sir.”
“Good.”
“Would you like us to inform her family?” He hesitated for a second, Nah, there will be no need for that.
Few minutes later a nurse walked towards him and said “Have you gotten the number we can use to reach her family?”
“Yes I have”. He responded.
Ooh let me have then sir.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and unlocked it. Here you go.
The nurses rushed off immediately.
While still waiting for some good news, his phone rang again.
He frowned. It was Ethan.
He was on his way to Ethan for a major business meeting before all of this happened.
He hesitated and then picked.
Then his phone rang again.
He frowned.
On the other end, Ethan sounded harsh, like one running out of patience. “Where are you? The meeting is about to start. The board is already seated. This isn’t the time to disappear.
Had a little issue my way, but I will be there soon, please bear with me.
Ethan hung up the phone call.
Hello Miss, he called out the woman at the counter.
I have to rush off somewhere, I will be back. Hope that’s okay?
She nodded in affirmation.
He immediately rushed out of the hospital, straight into his car.
A few minutes passed, and the hospital reached out to one of her family.
“Hello?” Greg’s voice came through, distracted, impatient.
“Good evening, sir. This is City Care Hospital. We are calling in regards to Miss Nora Hayes.”
There was a brief pause on the other end.
“What about her?” Greg asked, suddenly paid more attention.
“She has been involved in a serious accident and is currently in the emergency unit.
Please, we would need you to make your way to the hospital and come identify yourself with her.
doctors were pleased with her progress, but they insisted she stay for further tests and monitoring.
Greg didn’t visit until the third day.
As he walked through the hospital corridor, a nurse recognized him immediately.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Greg.”
“Good afternoon.”
“We’ve been expecting you. The doctor would like to speak with you before you see Miss Hayes.”
Greg glanced at his wristwatch and sighed impatiently.
“Fine. Lead the way.”
A few moments later, they stepped into the doctor’s office.
The doctor adjusted the patient’s file in front of him and removed his glasses.
“I’m afraid the scan results revealed something concerning.”
Greg frowned.
“What exactly are you trying to say?”
The thing is Miss Nora Hayes… he stuttered.
Then paused
“I’m sorry, Mr. Greg… but the damage is far more serious than we initially thought.” Miss Hayes life may never be back to normalcy again.
