Silence, complete silence filled the room.
Nora stood so static. Her breath seized for a minute.
“Ooh no Lord, this cannot be happening”. She said underneath her breath.
Say Yes! Say yes! Say yes!. The crowd behind her chanted loudly.
They probably thought that this would be a perfect match but unlike everyone, Nora could see through Greg. And all she could imagine that moment was the b*****e she would step into the moment she said “Yes” to the union.
“Say yes”. The guest chanted even louder.
After Nora had stood still for a while without saying a word. The smile on Greg's face was gradually fading away.
He perceived that Nora may do something stupid like saying “No” and this will be a dent to his name.
Immediately, he squeezed his brows and squinted his eyes, using that to signal Nora to do the needful.
Nora caught this, and out of fear of what Greg could do to her if she said “No” gripped her tightly.
Ye… Yes. She stuttered.
Yes? Greg asked while nodding his head.
Yes! Nora affirmed.
“Yes! Beautiful”. Everyone in the room jumped in excitement.
Tears escaped Nora's eyes, others thought that it was merely tears of Joy but only she knows what she has just gotten herself into.
A toast was made as everyone in the room made merry.
Nora tried to keep up with a fake smile as there were delicate people in the room and she couldn’t mess that up.
Nora gracefully sat at one corner of the room. A few seconds later Greg walked up to her and whispered in her ear.
“What was the meaning of that stunt you pulled out there”.
He said this while wearing a smile, to avoid raising eyebrows.
At first, Nora gave no response.
“I’m talking to you”. He said with an even louder tone.
“What was that all about earlier”.
“I’m.. Nora clears throat”.
I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to embarrass you, I was just shocked and filled with the euphoria of the moment.
Greg looked at her for a minute.
I will let this slide but this should never repeat itself again.
He walked out on her.
Nora looked up to the ceiling and said…
“Dear God, this cannot be your will for me”.
Seconds after Greg walked away, Nora remained seated, lost in thought.
She glanced at her “perfect ring and engagement party” only that it didn’t seem so perfect to her.
Nora twisted the ring on her finger. Every woman in the room seems to think she has won.
Everyone sees Greg as the perfect gentleman. But more than ever she felt like she had lost something.
Everyone keeps saying; “You are so lucky”, “Greg is such a catch”, “I wish I’m you”.
Everyone seemed to have a good to say except Vannessa who rudely walked up to her, pulled up Nora’s hand and said;
“Nice ring, at least someone saw value in you”, “finally you have something that’s not as cheap as your personality”.
After saying these brutal words, she walked out on Nora before she could say a word.
In all of this, Vannessa was too little a headache to worry about as she had other pressing issues.
Fear firmly gripped Nora, she took a bottle of wine to soak it all up.
Moments later, she was pressed and needed to use the restroom.
She gathered her things and stood up. still putting on a fake smile so no one would sense how unsettled she was.
She slowly walked towards the bathroom.
But, on her way there, she couldn’t help but notice some voices coming from the opposite room.
At first she ignored me, because this is a public space and noise should be normal.
But the further she went, the more something compelled her to go towards the direction of the voices.
As she got closer, she could have sworn that the female voice she heard was Vanessa’s but a part of her was still uncertain so she moved even closer.
She couldn’t really hear the voice of the other person in the room but something the female voice said kept her gulled to the door.
The tension in the room grew stronger and her curiosity could no longer take it.
Slowly, Nora reached for the door handle,
And Pushed.
