Beyond the Pranks โ€“ Truths and Shadows

483 Words
Our friendship had blossomed beautifully. We were no longer just classmates who exchanged notes; we were confidants. We spent hours chatting, and somewhere along the line, the banter turned into genuine trust. However, this deepening bond brought a reality I was completely unprepared for. โ€‹One evening, while talking about his life and the people he spent time with, his mood shifted. With a heavy heart, he confessed something that left me stunned: he had been using drugs. He spoke about how his group of friends, whom I had always suspected were a bad influence, had introduced him to this world. Hearing this from him, seeing his vulnerability, broke my heart. โ€‹The mischievous boy who pulled my hair in class was struggling in silence, trapped in a cycle created by the wrong people. In that instant, my perspective shifted. The anger I felt toward his 'bad company' turned into a firm resolve: I had to save him. I didn't care how difficult it would be; I was going to pull him back to the light. โ€‹But life loves to complicate things. Amidst this mission to 'save' him, our conversations often took a different turn. He would text me frequently, and during one of those deep chats, he brought up the 'prank' incident again. โ€‹"Hey, remember when I said I liked you?" he asked, his tone unusually serious. "I wasn't joking then. It was the truth. Can you just say yes?" โ€‹I froze. I cared for him deeply, but my heart was clearโ€”I saw him as a best friend, a brother-like figure, but nothing more. There were no romantic sparks. I gently but firmly said 'no' again. โ€‹The reaction was immediate. He retreated into his comfort zone, laughing it off. "Haha, I was just kidding again! You really thought I was serious? It was a prank, chill!" โ€‹I couldn't help but sigh. It was so transparent! Who in their right mind pulls the same 'prank' twice with such sincerity? It was obvious he was dead serious, but his pride was too fragile to handle the rejection. He was terrified of being humiliated, so he used the "it was a prank" shield to keep his dignity intact. โ€‹I played along, pretending to believe his lie, because I knew he needed his pride right now. But behind my screen, I was worried. He was fighting two battles: one with his own feelings for me, and the much darker one against the substances that were destroying him. โ€‹I knew that by rejecting his love, I had to be even more careful. I had to remain his friendโ€”his only anchor. I was navigating a narrow path: keeping him away from love while pulling him away from destruction. It was a heavy burden, but as I looked at his messages, I knew I couldn't walk away. โ€‹
