Eleven– Her POV (Breakfast with the Devil)

397 Words
Morning sunlight spilled into the dining room, soft and golden, but there was nothing warm about the tension in the air. I sat at the long mahogany table, staring at the untouched croissant on my plate, while the man across from me read the morning paper as if nothing had happened. Alexander Steele. Calm. Relaxed. Untouchable. Not a single trace of last night’s kiss lingered on his face. He sipped his black coffee slowly, as though he hadn’t set my entire world on fire hours ago. I wanted to scream. “Are you seriously going to sit there and act like nothing happened?” I blurted, unable to stop myself. His paper lowered, just enough for me to catch the faintest smirk tugging at his lips. “Good morning to you too, sweetheart.” My blood boiled. “Don’t call me that.” “Why not?” He folded the paper neatly and set it aside. His dark eyes locked on mine, steady and unreadable. “You seem to respond every time I do.” Heat rushed to my cheeks, but I refused to let him win. “You’re insufferable.” “And yet,” he said smoothly, cutting into his omelet with surgical precision, “you kissed me.” I nearly choked on air. “I told you—it was a mistake.” “Mm.” He chewed thoughtfully, as if I hadn’t spoken at all. “Funny thing about mistakes, Elena. Most people don’t close their eyes and moan when they make them.” My fork clattered against the plate. “You—! You arrogant—” He leaned back in his chair, utterly unbothered, watching me lose control like it amused him. “Go on. Say it. Insult me all you want. But you can’t deny what happened between us.” “I already did!” “No, sweetheart.” His voice dipped lower, dangerous, velvet-soft. “You tried to.” The silence stretched, thick and suffocating. My chest heaved, my heart pounding so hard I could barely hear over it. Finally, I shoved my chair back and stood. “You know what? Enjoy your breakfast alone.” I stormed toward the door, my hands shaking. But before I reached it, his voice followed, smooth and certain. “You’ll come back, Elena. You always do.” And damn him… he wasn’t wrong.
