CHAPTER 33The marines crept warily through the blasted opening, peering into a dust-choked blackness beyond. A sergeant in the lead silently motioned his troops to fan out and keep cover behind boulders and smoldering wreckage. Suddenly, more machine gun fire split the silence and another battle ensued, seen only as blazing streaks of light in the darkness. The marines saturated the cavern with a blind, reckless hail of bullets. Almost immediately, the fighting stopped. Three soldiers, lying prone behind the twisted remains of a small cannon, almost failed to notice the lone onrushing attacker breaking into the sunlight to their right. Dressed in camouflage fatigues and carrying an automatic weapon in one hand and a pistol in the other, the gunman fired wildly, hitting rock and smoldering
