CHAPTER 19Henry lay atop the covers of his motel bed, peering over his shoes at a television screen. A sickeningly familiar scene intruded into his darkened room. The news camera panned a parking lot full of ambulances and police cars, their flashing lights producing a hypnotic effect. Slowly, the view shifted to the front door of the defiled restaurant where ashen faced EMTs wheeled out one shrouded body after another. A crowd of onlookers had gathered beyond the cordon, many of whom cried openly. One small group had joined hands and commenced singing the familiar hymn "Amazing Grace." Off-camera a TV newswoman delivered a subdued report, most of which the agent ignored. He registered only the last few words: "one of the worst mass murders in American history."
