CHAPTER 23Curious stares followed Agents Henry and Gold as they pushed into the Federal Building in Chicago and hurried for the lobby elevators. Whether their rapid pace or rumors about Dayspring elicited this attention neither cared to speculate. They ascended to the fourth floor, unspeaking and otherwise alone. Like a race horse straining at the gate, Henry waited impatiently until the door split open. Then he charged across the small lobby and into FBI headquarters. Always mindful of Agent Gold trailing him, he once entertained the urge to take her by the hand, but quickly dismissed it. Henry neglected to greet the receptionist, but Gold's quick wave met with a look of surprise and sadness which made the junior agent's heart fall.
