The entire guest was in uproar, with so many whispers and so many people taking pictures, including Kaycee, She wasn’t going to let her blog miss out on this juicy gist.
Dexter was very furious. “What sort of joke is this, Serena? You know what is at stake if you try anything funny, he said, turning over to Devyn.
“Mr. Balch, I am sorry for whatever trouble my soon-to-be wife must have caused to bring you down here despite your busy schedule,” he said calmly to Devyn.
“Are you calling my wife a nuisance, Mr. Wood Stone?"
At this point, Dexter was speechless and shocked. “What do you mean, wife? I am about to marry her."
"Then I guess you will have to cancel this wedding." Devyn said, handing Dexter a signed document that read, "Marriage Certificate,
“Is this your signature?” Dexter asked Serena, tossing the document at her angrily.
She checked it, looking really confused. “It is mine, but I don’t remember signing it. I did not sign this. You have to believe me.” She said,
“What kind of stunt do you think you are trying to pull? Do you know how much it cost for me to marry you?" Dexter said angrily, using an air quote gesture,
When he said, Marry you. Serena, on the verge of tears, turns to Devyn and says, “What the hell is this? I never signed those. I have never met you. Why are you trying to ruin my life right now?"
He turns to her ears with a smirk and whispers, “Ruin? You and I both know you do not want to marry this perverted jerk."
"That is rich coming from a younger version of chaos," she whispered back, which surprised him.
“Oh, so do you know me? Look, that document is real, and you are legally married to me, plus you do not want me sharing the story of how you signed that document.”
She looked at him lost. “I have no idea what you are talking about, and I can’t leave with you because of my mother."
“I know all about your arrangement, and I’m telling you , you have a better chance with me. I can help your mother and give you a better option than this jerk, right?
Serena thinks for a minute that even though she will be entering and getting married, she had better do it with someone attractive, and if Devyn offers to help her mother as well, then she had better go for a better-looking creep. She looks at Dexter and then says, “This wedding is off."
Dexter grabs her arm with anger. “If you think I spent so much money for you to come act like a brat and embarrass me in public, then you have something else coming for you. Remember, I still have your mother, right?"
Devyn grabs Dexter’s hands off Serena. “Actually, Mr. Woods Stone, you don't. I had my men retrieve Mrs Campbell and take her to a safer location. As for the money you spent, I’ll have my secretary send every dime back to you.
” He turns to Serena and says out loud, “I wouldn’t want my wife indebted to anyone.” He takes her hand, and they both walk out of the wedding hall. Just as they got to the car, Serena jerked her hand away from Devyn.
“Now speak, what is going on, and how in the world do I know you?"
“Actually, you don't. Well, not enough at least, and for you to get the full story, you’ll have to get in the car; we don’t have time."
“Where are we going?" Serena asks.
“We are going to meet my parents , your new family, so get your act together Mrs. Devyn Balch.” He says, opening the door for her to get in the car.
“Don’t call me that." As they drove, Serena said uneasy
He had told her how she signed the marriage certificate at the bar they met, but he wasn’t detailed enough. She could not have signed a document drunk, or was she that sad and desperate?
As she went through the contract Devyn had drafted, she could not help but notice one particular rule, so she asked, “What is this?” She showed it to him.
“Oh yeah, the most sacred rule, I do not want kids. You break that rule, and our deal is off.”
Serena lets out a loud laugh, leaving Devyn clueless.
“Is there something funny in what I said?” he asked. He was not taking it funny; no one laughed at Devyn Balch.
“Well yeah, funny that you think I’ll want to try to make one with you perverted jerk,” she said, still laughing.
“I don’t get why you keep calling me that; I practically saved you, and most girls would kill to be in your shoes right now.”
“Then go save them, Superman. Why am I here then? Get this straight. I did not ask you to save me. I don’t even know you, and the crappy story about me being drunk is very suspicious.”
Devyn was in a major shock. This wasn’t the girl he met at the bar crying about being married to a major rich psycho. The girl in front of him is a totally different person.
"Sir, we are here.” The driver interrupts their argument.
“Are we meeting your parents in a fashion house.” Serena asked
He scoffs, “Nope, but you are not seeing my parents looking like that,” he said, using his eyes to examine her head to toe.
“What is wrong with what I am wearing?” Serena asked, almost furious.
Not only did this man drag her out of her wedding, thank God, he is also calling her a whack dresser.
“Please have enough bickering and get outside; I do not have time to waste here.”
They both got out and went into the store. Serena was amazed at how beautiful this place looked and the amazing fashion it held. She thought to herself,
If she were still an editor, she would definitely love to write at this place.
As they walked in, two ladies walked up to them. “Good day, Mr. Balch, what can we help you with today?” one of them said with a smile. Serena found it very irritating.
“What do they see in this man? Definitely his money, because it can be his face or his very annoying ego,” Serena said to herself.
“Would you be so kind as to get her something more presentable?” he said to the ladies.
“Of course, sir. Come with me, please, madam." said one of the ladies.
Serena was taken to a room to try on as many dresses as she could, to the point where she was extremely exhausted because Devyn kept shaking his head at every outfit she tried on.
“What is this man’s problem really?" Serena thought to herself and stormed out of the dressing room, angry.
“Excuse me, sir. I know you have a preference for whatever type of dress you want but not at the expense of my sanity, so this is what we are going to do. I like what I am wearing, so this is what we are going to get.”
She turns to the ladies and asks, “How much is this, please?”
“One hundred and fifty thousand dollars,” the lady responded.
“What, how could a dress cost so much?” she said out loud without thinking. With shock, she mumbled in embarrassment.
“I could try something else, preferably something cheaper, please.”
But before she could move, Devyn cut her off. “Well, take it.”
Turning to leave, he said to her, “I like it too” and smiled.
"Like, I need your permission,” she responded before walking off to the car.
“What did I just witness?” one of the ladies said out loud after they had left.
“I know right, never in my wildest dreams did I think Devyn would ever be told off like that, the second lady replied.
As they drive in silence, Serena could not take the awkwardness any longer; silence drives her crazy.
“So do you mind telling me where we are headed, so I don’t feel like I am being kidnapped?” she breaks the awkward silence.
“To see my parents,” he finally lets out..”
"Oh, I see, but why soon? I mean, I only just found out I was married to you’
That is nothing to worry your head about; just one thing: my family must not know that this is a contract marriage, especially my brother.”
He looked serious this time, not that he doesn’t always have that look; it just felt different to Serena, so she didn’t argue this time and just nodded.
They approached the gates of the Balch family mansion, and Serena was already taken aback. She knew this guy was rich but not old money rich; the landscape of the entire estate could house her entire home town, but she had a familiar feeling like she had been here before.
“This place looks amazing; did you grow up here?” she asked
"No,” Devyn responded without lifting his head from his iPad.
She wasn’t sure if he was a chronic workaholic or if he was just an obnoxious jerk.
As they approached the main entrance, she could see the workers in the house assembling right in front before the car came to a halt.
“Stay in the car; let me get the door for you my love." Devyn said this to Serena before stepping out of the car.
Serena was in shock at the words she had just heard: “My love? Did this guy hit his head while I wasn’t looking or something?”
Devyn opens the door and stretches out his hands to her. She looks at it without moving and says, “What are you doing, mister?”
“Just play along and grab my hands, God damn it,” he said to her.
At this time, his father and stepmother have arrived to welcome him, giving him a big hug. Mr. Balch sighed at Serena and asked, “Who is this young lady, Devyn?”
Devyn turns to Serena and walks back to where she was standing nervously. He puts his hands behind her waist and pulls her close to him, looking her in the eyes with the most loving expression they have ever seen.
Devyn displays the most loving expression and says, “Everyone meet my wife.”
