5 AVA We were halfway through brunch on Saturday when Liam leaned back in his chair, looked across the table at me, and said, “Let’s get out of the city. Just you and me.” I blinked at him, mimosa halfway to my lips. “Like... a trip?” He shrugged, that boyish grin pulling at his mouth. “Just a weekend. No expectations.” My stomach did a strange little twist. No expectations. That was always the line we used when we were trying to pretend this wasn’t becoming something more. I should’ve said no. I should’ve reminded him, and myself, what the rules were. But instead, I said, “Okay.” We booked a last-minute room at a boutique hotel two hours north. It was one of those places with exposed brick walls and big windows, and the kind of bed that made you want to stay tangled in it all day.
