TWO PINK LINES

Amelia barely remembered leaving the Blackwood Mansion. The drive back to her small apartment passed in a blur of traffic lights, crowded streets, and painful memories she couldn't escape. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Alexander. His cold expression. His indifferent voice. The way he had asked for a divorce as casually as someone canceling a meeting. By the time she reached her apartment, the nausea had returned. She dropped her suitcase beside the couch and rushed to the bathroom. Minutes later, she sat on the cold tiled floor, breathing heavily. Something wasn't right. She knew her body. The dizziness. The nausea. The unusual exhaustion. A possibility she had been trying desperately to ignore was becoming harder and harder to deny. "No," she whispered. Her hands trembled. The timing was impossible. Cruel. Almost laughable. After everything that had happened, life couldn't possibly be this unfair. Could it? An hour later, Amelia found herself standing in a pharmacy several blocks away. The cashier handed her a small paper bag. Amelia paid quickly and left before anyone could recognize her. The entire walk home felt endless. Her heart hammered inside her chest. She wasn't ready. Not for this. Not for another heartbreak. Back inside her apartment, she stared at the pregnancy test resting on the bathroom sink. It looked so small. So harmless. Yet it had the power to change everything. Her future. Her plans. Her life. Taking a shaky breath, she followed the instructions. Then came the waiting. Three minutes. Three impossibly long minutes. Amelia paced the bathroom. Thirty seconds. One minute. Ninety seconds. Her palms were soaked with sweat. Every possible outcome raced through her mind. What if she wasn't pregnant? What if she was? What would she do? How would she survive? How could she raise a child alone? The timer on her phone finally beeped. Amelia froze. For a moment, she couldn't move. Fear rooted her in place. Slowly, she turned toward the sink. Her eyes lowered to the test. Then her breath caught. Two pink lines. The room seemed to tilt. Amelia stared. Once. Twice. Three times. The result never changed. Positive. She was pregnant. A strangled sound escaped her throat. Not quite a laugh. Not quite a sob. Maybe both. Her legs gave out. She slid onto the floor. Tears filled her eyes. A baby. Alexander's baby. The realization crashed into her like a wave. The child growing inside her had been conceived during the only night Alexander had ever truly belonged to her. The only night she had allowed herself to dream. The only night she had believed they might have a future together. Now that future was gone. But the child remained. Amelia pressed a trembling hand against her stomach. A thousand emotions battled inside her. Fear. Shock. Confusion. Hope. For the first time in two days, something other than pain occupied her thoughts. A tiny life. Her child. Their child. The thought should have made her happy. Instead, fresh tears spilled down her cheeks. Because she already knew what would happen if Alexander found out. He would demand custody. Or worse. He might think she was using the baby to trap him. A bitter smile touched her lips. He already believed the worst of her. Why would this be any different? The ringing of her phone interrupted her thoughts. Amelia glanced at the screen. Her stomach tightened. It was her grandmother. The one person who had always loved her unconditionally. The one person who didn't know her marriage had already fallen apart. Taking a deep breath, Amelia answered. "Grandma." "My darling!" her grandmother said warmly. "How is married life?" The question nearly broke her. Amelia closed her eyes. For a moment, she couldn't speak. "Amelia?" "I'm here." "Are you crying?" "No." The lie sounded weak. Her grandmother sighed. "What happened?" Amelia wanted to tell her everything. The wedding. Victoria. The divorce. The pregnancy. But the words refused to come. How could she explain that her marriage had ended before it truly began? How could she admit that the man she loved had never loved her at all? "I'm just tired," Amelia finally said. A long silence followed. Her grandmother wasn't fooled. She never was. "Come visit me tomorrow." Amelia swallowed. "Grandma—" "Tomorrow." The older woman's tone softened. "You don't have to face whatever this is alone." Fresh tears threatened. Amelia nodded despite knowing her grandmother couldn't see her. "Okay." After ending the call, she sat quietly for a long time. The apartment felt different now. Smaller somehow. The silence heavier. Eventually, she stood and walked to the living room. Outside, rain began tapping against the windows. Dark clouds covered the evening sky. Amelia curled up on the couch. Her hand drifted once more to her stomach. A baby. She still couldn't believe it. The child was innocent. Completely innocent. And yet this baby had already entered a complicated world. A world filled with betrayal, secrets, and heartbreak. Would Alexander ever know? The question haunted her. Part of her wanted to tell him. He deserved to know he was going to be a father. Didn't he? But another part of her remembered the cold look in his eyes. The indifference. The rejection. The divorce papers. No. Alexander had made his choice. He had chosen Victoria. He had chosen a life without Amelia. And now she would have to choose a life without him. Across the city, inside the penthouse suite of Blackwood Holdings, Alexander stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the skyline. A glass of whiskey rested untouched in his hand. The city lights glittered below. Normally, work distracted him. Tonight it wasn't enough. Something felt off. He couldn't explain it. A knock sounded at his office door. "Come in." Victoria entered. Her smile was radiant. Confident. Victorious. Exactly the way she'd looked since returning. She wrapped her arms around his waist. "I've missed this." Alexander nodded absentmindedly. Victoria frowned. "You're distracted." "I'm fine." "You're thinking about her." His jaw tightened. "Amelia is no longer my concern." Victoria studied him carefully. "Then why haven't you touched your drink?" Alexander glanced at the untouched whiskey. For a moment, he remembered Amelia's face when she signed the divorce papers. The hurt in her eyes. The trembling of her hands. An uncomfortable feeling settled in his chest. Regret? No. Impossible. He had done the right thing. Hadn't he? Victoria stepped closer. "You made the right choice." Alexander remained silent. The strange feeling refused to disappear. Somewhere deep inside, a voice whispered that something important had just slipped through his fingers. But he ignored it. Because Amelia Hart was part of his past now. And Alexander Blackwood never looked back. Neither of them knew that fate had other plans. Because at that very moment, a tiny heartbeat had already begun growing inside Amelia. A heartbeat that would change all of their lives forever.
