CHAPTER 5: Beneath the Surface

Mia was frozen record, with Alex’s words playing over in her head.

“Rachel is not the only secret I’ve been hiding either.”

A slow, creeping dread closed over her chest as she made herself look in his eyes. Something in his eyes — guilt, hesitation and, well, something else. Fear.

“Then start talking,” she said, her voice low.

Alex gulped and rubbed his hands over his face. "It’s not just about Rachel. It’s about everything. Our marriage, my career, my family.”

Mia’s stomach churned. "What are you trying to say?"

He paused and then finally answered. “I’ve lied to you about much more than the affair. There’s something you don’t know — something I’ve been buried for years. And if it does come out, it won’t just ruin our marriage. It’ll destroy everything."

The Weight of Secrets

Mia felt the walls closing in. She had come home tonight anticipating a confrontation about the affair. She was braced for heartbreak, for anger, for the slow disintegration of their marriage. But this? This was something different altogether.

“Well, stop being cryptic, Alex. Just tell me the truth."

He swallowed hard, as if the words hurt him physically. “My dad … his business … it’s not as clean as it looks.”

A chill ran down Mia’s spine. “Do you mean your family is doing something illegal?”

Mia retreated, needing distance, needing oxygen. “Say you’re not in on it. Tell me you didn’t know."

“I wish I could,” Alex said, his voice empty. "But I did know. I’ve always known. And I allowed it to happen because I didn’t know another way out.”

Mia took his confession like a physical blow. "You lied to me. Each and every day, you lied to me.”

"I was protecting you!" Alex’s voice grew louder, his frustration seeping out. “I kept you from it, and I didn’t want you to get hurt.”

Mia was shaking her head, tears blistering in her eyes. “You don’t get to fucking decide that for me. You don’t get to build a life with me on lies and call it protection.”

Alex ran an exasperated hand through his hair. "Mia, listen—"

"No, you listen!" she interrupted, her voice shaking with rage. "I stood by you. I trusted you. And it turns out our whole marriage is a web of corruption and betrayal? How am I going to live with that?

Unraveling the Illusion

It was loud enough to feel, hitting me like a wave at the back. Alex’s back slumped, fatigue and blame pinning him down. “I never wanted it to get to this point. But it’s too late now.”

Mia’s pulse quickened. "Too late for what?"

He waited, then spoke the words that turned her blood to ice. "They know you know."

Mia’s breath hitched. "Who?"

"My father. His associates. The people who maintain the world we live in.”

A nauseating realization crept in. “You are telling me that I’m in danger?

Alex didn’t answer right away. Then, finally, he nodded. "Yes."
