Chapter 8: Consequences of Truth

536 Words
Mia remained silent, Alex's words reverberating in her thoughts. It was a truth that bore down on her like a second skin. The discovery that Nathan Carter was back home had blown away whatever sense of control she had thought she possessed. Just hearing the name sent a chill down her spine: Nathan was not a man to be trifled with. The ghosts of the past blended with her present, perverting every message she thought she’d received. Alex was in front of her, sincerity written all over him, all Mia could see was the lies that had crept into their marriage. How many more secrets was he keeping? A Ghost From the Past Nathan Carter wasn’t just a ghost — he was a destroyer of specters. A man whose very existence implied bedlam. He hadn’t been around in years, but now, as if summoned by the unspooling of Alex’s lies, he was back, and he wanted something. Mia’s heart raced as she went over the events of the last few days. Rachel’s machinations, Alex’s betrayal, now Nathan’s ominous arrival. It was all connected—she could feel it. But how? The response came sooner than she thought. A knock at the door startled her. Alex stiffened, the color draining from his face. He moved toward the door without a word, opened it and hesitated. Nathan remained there — practically oozing a menace of silence. His dark eyes roamed the room, finding Mia. A slow smile spread across his face. "Mia," he drawled. "It’s been a while." Her blood ran cold. The Price of Truth Nathan walked in, stepping with the bravado of a man who had nothing to lose. His eyes slid to the left, and a gleam danced in his eyes at Alex. “I have to give you credit, Alex, you’ve done quite a number on her.” Mia bristled. "What do you want?" Nathan chuckled. "Straight to the point. I like that. But you know what I want. Alex clenched his fists. "Stay out of this, Nathan." "Out of this?" Nathan raised a brow. “You involved me in this when you decided to lie to her. And now, well …” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black envelope, tossing it onto the coffee table. “Take this as my invitation to the next act of your little drama.” Dread as thick and oily as rags coiling in her gut, Mia stared at the envelope. Whatever was contained within, it had the potential to be the game-changer. Her hand went to it, and Alex caught her wrist. “No,” he said, voice urgent. She jerked her hand away and grabbed the envelope. Enclosed was a single photograph. She gasped, breath catching in her throat. The image was Alex and Rachel… except, it was more than an affair. It was something far worse. Mia glanced up at Alex, betrayal and horror roiling inside of her. "What have you done?" Nathan chuckled darkly. “Oh, dear, you have no clue.” Mia is put to the ultimate test of loyalty. What does Nathan hold in his hands? What will she do when the truth is finally laid bare?
