3. The Shadow That Moved

837 Words
Night wrapped Aryavan in deep silence. Oil lamps burned low along the stone paths, their golden light trembling in the forest wind. The trees stood like dark giants around the kingdom, whispering to one another in a language older than memory. Agnishka could not sleep. She sat on the edge of her bed, the dagger resting in her palm. The stone floor was cold beneath her bare feet, grounding her in the present. Something was wrong. Not a sound. Not a shadow. Just a pressure in her chest, heavy and slow, like the world itself was holding its breath. _____________ Across the kingdom, Agnivardhan stopped walking. Pain struck his chest without warning. Sharp. Sudden. Terrifying. He pressed his palm there, breath uneven. “Agnishka…” he whispered. He did not know why he said her name. He only knew she was in danger. He turned and ran. ______________ The shadow slipped into Agnishka’s chamber like smoke through stone. Cold spread across the floor. The lamps dimmed. Agnishka rose slowly, blade ready, her face calm though her pulse thundered. The shadow stood tall and thin, its eyes glowing faint red. Then the door burst open. Agnivardhan burst inside, sword drawn. “What is this thing?” he shouted. “How did it enter with this much security?” The shadow moved. Agnivardhan stepped in front of Agnishka without thinking. “Stay behind me,” he said. The shadow rushed forward. Agnivardhan raised his sword— Then Agnishka stumbled. He grabbed her arm to pull her back. The moment their skin touched— Beneath her sleeve, the mark flared. Soft. Golden. Alive. Neither of them saw it. But the world felt it. Agnivardhan’s breath caught. A strange heat spread through his chest. And he thought— Stop. The shadow froze. The lamps went still. Silence crashed into the room. Agnishka did not breathe. Her eyes were locked on the dark shape hanging in the air. Then she looked at Agnivardhan’s hand. Still holding her arm. Her voice came out low and sharp. “What did you just do?” He didn’t answer. He was staring at his own hand. “I… I don’t know.” Her heart started pounding. Not romance. Fear. “This thing came into a guarded kingdom,” she said, pointing at the shadow, “and you stopped it with your mind.” Her grip tightened on his sleeve. “That is not normal.” The shadow struggled. Agnishka steepped back slowly. “Tell me the truth,” she said. “Are you human?” Agnivardhan looked at her — and for the first time, he looked scared. “I thought I was,” he whispered. Her breath shook. “I don’t remember who I am,” she said, “and now I don’t know who you are either.” The shadow screamed silently. The golden light faded. The shadow escaped. Gone. They stood there in the ruined quiet. Two people who no longer trusted the world they stood in. The shadow vanished into the wall. Silence fell hard and heavy. Agnivardhan did not look at Agnishka again. He was already moving. “This is not safe,” he said sharply, more to himself than to her. “Not safe at all.” He turned and strode to the door. The corridor echoed with his voice “Guards!” Boots rushed. Steel rang. Two guards and an older maid entered at once, fear in their eyes. “Lock this chamber,” Agnivardhan ordered. “No one enters without my word. No one leaves with her.” He turned to the maid. “Stay with her,” he said. “If she needs water, food, clothes, medicine — anything — you bring it. Do you understand?” “Yes, my prince,” the maid whispered, bowing. He faced the guards again. “Protect her with your lives,” he said. “If that shadow returns, you sound the horn and run. Do not fight it.” They nodded, pale but firm. He finally looked at Agnishka. For a moment, his fear broke through his control. “I will return,” he said quietly. “I swear it.” Then he left. Agnivardhan did not slow. He ran through the stone halls, cloak flying behind him. Guards leapt aside as he reached the outer gate. A horse was already being brought forward. “Open the gates!” he ordered. Steel chains fell. The forest swallowed the path beyond. He swung onto the horse in one smooth motion. “Protect her,” he called back. “With your lives.” Then he kicked the horse forward. Hooves thundered across stone. And Aryavan watched its prince disappear into the dark forest. ______________ Inside the chamber, Agnishka stood very still. The maid wrapped a shawl around her shoulders. “My lady,” she whispered, “you are safe here.” Agnishka did not answer. She only listened to the fading sound of hooves. And wondered what she had become part of.
