The Rogue Alpha
My heart hammered in my chest as i backed away from the stranger emerging from the shadows. The moonlight filtered through the canopy of trees above, illuminating his face in a stark, almost ethereal glow. His eyes—dark and piercing—were locked on me with a gaze that felt like it was stripping me bare. I instinctively curled my fingers into fists, my nails biting into my palms, as if the physical pain might somehow ground me in this moment of chaos.
The rogue Alpha didn’t move toward me, but there was something in the air—a palpable pressure that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. I could feel the power rolling off of him, almost like a force of nature. Dangerous. Unpredictable. Yet, i couldn’t turn away. My wolf stirred uneasily within me, recognizing the primal strength in his presence.
“You should be careful, little wolf. The woods are dangerous at night,” his voice was smooth, low, and filled with an unsettling confidence.
My chest tightened at the sound of it. There was something about him—something raw and wild that felt like it matched the fury raging inside me. I wasn’t sure whether it was fear or something else, something darker, that gripped me so completely.
“Who are you?” I demanded, trying to steady my breathing. My voice wavered only slightly, but i could feel the tremor beneath the surface. The night, once so familiar, now felt like a trap, and this man—this rogue wolf—was the key to it all.
He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he took a slow, deliberate step forward, and the tension in the air grew thicker, heavier. His eyes never left mine, like he was reading me, studying my every reaction. I could feel the weight of his gaze as if it were a physical touch.
“Do you think you can outrun your fate, little wolf?” His lips curled into a faint smirk, as if amused by my defiance.
I stiffened. My fate?
“I’m not interested in your games, rogue. Stay away from me.” I wasn't sure if I believed the words myself. The last few hours had shattered everything I knew about the world I lived in. How could I be expected to navigate through the storm without any anchor?
The rogue laughed—a soft, dangerous sound that sent a shiver down my spine. “Oh, but you are a part of the game now. Whether you like it or not.”
His voice was a whisper now, coming from everywhere, as though the trees themselves carried his words. I instinctively took a step back, my wolf urging me to flee, to run faster than I ever had before. But my legs wouldn’t move. The force of his presence held me in place like a spell.
"You’ve been marked, Lena Aldric," he said, his tone shifting to something more serious. "Not just by the Alpha who rejected you, but by something much older. You have no idea the power running through your veins. But I do."
My heart skipped a beat. He knew my name. How did he know my name? How did he know I was the one rejected by Kade?
"Who the hell are you?" I demanded, my voice rising with a hint of panic, my feet moving cautiously but decisively, as if i could somehow put distance between myself and this stranger who knew far too much.
A small, knowing smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "I am someone who has been waiting for you." His eyes glimmered with an intensity that made my skin prickle. "I’m Damon Voss. Rogue Alpha of the Ravencross Pack.”
The name struck me like a thunderclap, but it was the pack that caught my attention. Ravencross? I’d heard of it, of course—whispers on the edge of my pack’s territory. It was a dangerous, lawless place. A pack run by those who had no allegiance to anyone but themselves. But I hadn't expected one of them to be standing in front of me.
Damon’s gaze never left mine as he continued, "But that’s not what matters. What matters is you, Lena. You’re not just a simple rejected mate. You’re something far more dangerous. A Moonborn."
The word echoed in my mind like a distant warning bell, one I couldn't quite place. My stomach twisted. I wanted to ask him what it meant, but something told me that if I did, I might never hear the answer. I could feel it now—the weight of his words, the pressure of an unknown future pressing against my chest.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I snapped, trying to keep the tremor from my voice, but inside me was unraveling. My heart was still broken, my body still aching from the rejection, but now something new was beginning to stir—fear.
“Oh, but you do,” Damon said softly, his eyes darkening with an intensity that was almost suffocating. "You feel it, don’t you? The power inside you, just waiting to be unleashed. You’re not just any werewolf. You were born with a gift, Lena. A gift that could destroy everything if it’s not controlled."
His words hit me like a punch to the gut. My mind raced as I struggled to process what he was saying. What was he talking about? Was this some kind of game? A trick?
“You think I have power?” I asked bitterly. “I’m nothing. Kade rejected me. My pack turned its back on me.”
Damon tilted his head, watching me with something akin to sympathy. “That’s where you’re wrong. You are something. Something they can’t even begin to understand. And that’s why they’re afraid of you. All of them.”
My pulse quickened. Was he trying to manipulate me? Make me believe something that wasn’t true?
“Don’t try to mess with my head,” I spat, trying to stand my ground, but the uncertainty in my heart began to gnaw at me. What if he was telling the truth? What if there was more to me than even I knew?
“Why would I lie?” Damon said with a flicker of amusement in his eyes. “I’m not here to deceive you, Lena. I’m here to help you.” He stepped forward, his gaze softening just for a moment. “You’re in danger. They won’t stop coming for you. Not just Kade. Not just the Blackthorn Pack. There are forces much darker than you can imagine that will stop at nothing to claim you.”
My breath hitched. I had no idea who or what he was talking about, but the cold, calculating look in his eyes told me this wasn’t just idle threat. He was serious.
Just then, the sound of twigs snapping broke the tense silence, followed by the unmistakable growl of a wolf—Kade’s wolf.
My heart raced. I hadn’t even heard him approach, but the deep rumble of his growl sent fear rippling through my veins. I wasn’t ready to face him. Not now. Not when my world had already been shattered.
Damon’s gaze flickered toward the sound, his expression unreadable. “It’s him, isn’t it? Your Alpha.”
I didn’t answer. I di
dn’t need to. Kade had come.
And i had nowhere to run.
