The Shadows Draw Near
My heart was pounding in my chest as I stared at the figure stepping out of the shadows. The forest around us fell silent, as if holding its breath, waiting for something to happen. The trees whispered in the wind, but even they seemed afraid of what was coming.
I couldn’t breathe.
The figure before us was tall, impossibly tall, and cloaked in shadows that seemed to ripple and shift. His face was hidden by a hood, but the darkness of his presence was unmistakable. I could feel the weight of his gaze, even without seeing his eyes. There was something ancient about him, something that made my skin crawl.
And then I heard it.
A voice, low and gravelly, but unmistakable. It sent a chill through my spine.
“Lena Aldrich,” the voice called. It knew me.
I instinctively took a step back, my pulse quickening. Damon’s body shifted beside me, his stance protective, but tense. He didn’t move to stop me, didn’t tell me to run. He just stood there, watching the figure with a look I couldn’t quite place—something between fear and defiance.
“Who are you?” I managed to force out, though my voice barely held steady. “What do you want?”
The figure didn’t answer right away. Instead, he took another step forward, his movements slow and deliberate, as though every step he took commanded attention. And, in some twisted way, it did.
“I am the one who has been watching you, Lena,” he finally spoke again, and his voice was like a cold breeze on a winter’s night. “I am the one who knows what you are.”
The words hit me like a physical blow. I stumbled back, almost tripping over my feet, my heart racing in my chest. “What… what do you mean?” I whispered, my voice barely audible. I wanted to ask more, but the words stuck in my throat. I could feel the weight of his gaze on me, like he could see inside my soul, into every corner of my being.
“You were born for this,” he continued, his voice reverberating through the air. “For the bloodline you carry. For the power you’ve yet to understand.”
I felt a sudden, intense wave of nausea hit me.
Power? What power was he talking about? The only power I knew was the one Kade had rejected, the one I had tried so hard to suppress. And yet, the words rang in my ears, taunting me with a truth I didn’t want to face.
Damon, still standing beside me, finally spoke, his voice harsh and low. “You’re wasting your time, Zayne. She’s not the one you want.”
Zayne.
The name hit me like a bolt of lightning, and my mind raced. I’d never heard of him before, but something about his presence felt familiar. Dangerous. Old. The way Damon reacted to him made it clear that this wasn’t the first time they had crossed paths. But why didn’t Damon want me to know him? What was Zayne to him?
Zayne tilted his head slightly, as though considering Damon’s words, but his gaze never wavered from me. “You think I want her for myself, Damon?” Zayne’s voice was filled with contempt. “I don’t want her. I want what she carries. And if you were smart, you would see that, too.”
My chest tightened at his words. What I carry? What the hell was he talking about? I didn’t even understand what was happening anymore. My thoughts were spiraling, and I felt a sudden cold sweat break out along my skin.
“You don’t even know what she’s capable of,” Damon growled, stepping forward to stand in front of me. I could feel his body tense, like he was preparing to protect me from whatever threat Zayne represented. But I had no idea what kind of threat Zayne could be. He looked human, but there was something about him that screamed predator.
“Don’t pretend like you know her better than I do,” Zayne retorted, his voice dripping with disdain. “She’s not some helpless little wolf. She’s a weapon. And you can’t protect her from what’s coming.”
I felt a pang in my chest at his words. I wasn’t helpless. Not anymore. I had spent too long running, hiding from the truth about myself. But this… this felt like something different. This wasn’t about Kade. It wasn’t about rejection or revenge. It was something bigger.
“Lena,” Damon’s voice was softer now, but there was an edge to it. He didn’t want to say what he was about to, but I could tell he was going to. “There’s something you don’t understand. Something about who you really are.”
I turned to him, desperate for some clarity, but before he could explain further, a growl interrupted him.
Kade’s wolf.
It was faint at first, a distant rumble in the trees. But then it grew louder, more ferocious, and I could feel it deep in my bones. Kade’s presence—no, his anger—was suffocating. He wasn’t just angry anymore. He was frenzied.
Zayne smiled. It wasn’t a kind smile. It was a smile of victory.
“I see your mate is on his way,” Zayne said, his tone mocking. “Let’s see how he reacts when he realizes the truth.”
I felt my breath catch in my throat, my pulse quickening as the ground beneath me trembled with each growl. But this time, it wasn’t Kade’s wolf I was worried about. It was Zayne.
Before I could even react, a dark blur moved through the trees, and I barely had time to brace myself before the figure of Kade’s wolf emerged from the shadows. His massive form was imposing, his eyes wild with rage, and for the first time in what felt like forever, I saw the truth in his eyes.
He wasn’t here to protect me.
He was here to destroy me.
I stepped back, my breath catching in my throat as I watched the battle unfold in front of me. But something wasn’t right.
The way Kade’s wolf stood—his posture rigid, his eyes locked on me with a ferocity I had never seen before—wasn't right. He was no longer the mate I had known. He was no longer the Kade I had loved.
“Stay back, Lena,” Damon warned, his voice tight. He moved closer, blocking my view of Kade, but his eyes never left the wolf. “This isn’t over. This is just the beginning.”
I didn’t know what he meant.
But one thing was certain—nothing would ever be the same again.
