CHAPTER 10 The next morning, despite going to bed so early, Caroline woke rather late. Perhaps too late, as her stomach felt uncertain in its emptiness. She feared getting out of the bed because of the nausea that was certain to result. “Victor?” she called. A moment later he poked his head in the door. “Yes?” “Can you please bring me something to eat?” she begged, holding her belly. His eyebrows drew together. “What would you like?” “Anything. I just don’t want to get up with an empty stomach.” Already her guts had begun to churn. “Okay, I’ll see what I can find. Rest easy. I’ll be right back.” He returned quickly with a banana, a glass of milk, and her pill. Perfect. Not too sweet, not too starchy.
