Pearl's POV.
This couldn't be happening. I began to breathe heavily, my hands trembling, the phone almost slipping off the floor.
"Pearl, get a grip on yourself." Magnus snapped, grabbing me by the shoulders, while Jaxton went towards my bed and saw the bag of snacks on my desk.
He grabbed the half-finished juice box, opened it, and sniffed the contents.
"Who gave you this?" He asked.
"I d-don't know," I replied as I released myself from Magnus' hold to dash into my closet.
"And you drank it? It's been drugged with sleeping pills." Jaxton half-yelled from my room and I froze.
"Now it all makes sense," Magnus said and I ran out of the closet to grab the juice from Jaxon.
"What do you need it for?" He questioned but I ignored him and looked inside well to see some whitish substance swimming about.
The juice fell to the ground, splattering and Magnus immediately grabbed a mop to clean the mess.
I was drugged? By Whom? Why?
Just then I remembered who came to see me an hour ago.
"Gittens did this," I told the two boys who were looking at me with worries flashing through their eyes.
"Gittens? Why would he?" Magnus arched his eyebrows at me while Jaxton folded his hands across his chest.
"She could be right. After all, he was the one pushing us not to wait for Pearl and have Lilith as Captain right away." Jaxton told Magnus who seemed to think it through.
My heart skipped a beat from fear at Jaxton's words.
"Thank God we insisted on more time and came to fetch her, before it was way too late." Magnus gestured towards my bathroom.
"In there. We have less than 20 minutes left."
I freshened up in less than 5 minutes and dropped the towel to the floor in my room, to put on my jersey. I was butt-naked and noticed Jaxton peeking at me from the magazine he was pretending to read.
A smile crossed my lips as I also saw Magnus gawking at my body from his cellphone. I ignored them and grabbed my stuff. In 5 more minutes, we exited the dorm.
"Now Pearl, do not attack Gittens, there is no concrete proof yet and you slaying this match is all that matters. You can deal with him later." Jaxon placed a hand on my shoulder and my heart melted as Magnus did the same with a grin.
'Were they encouraging me? Was this their way of apologizing for betraying my trust?' I pondered and became more determined to win.
Lilith was just another boulder in my pathway, and I shall defeat it.
The boys and I ran into the venue, and I saw Elara pacing the field, biting her nails, a habit she does when she is frustrated or worried.
"I am here, I apologize for the delay," I spoke up and she turned around sharply to run towards me.
"Bless the moon goddess." She praised as she hugged me.
"Are you alright?" She patted me on the back and I nodded.
"Yeah, I am ready," I told her, as she disengaged from the hug, to look me in the eyes.
"You sure? Weren't you planning on running before I could hand your ass over to you?" Lilith mocked, and surprisingly, I felt nothing; her words had no effect on me anymore.
I looked into her golden irises then laughed and walked up to her.
"You wish." I leaned to whisper in her eyes and walked past her, brushing her with my shoulder intentionally.
Everyone stared, their lips parting in surprise, while Gittens, who sat a few miles away from me, clenched his hands into fists. Just then, Grim drove in and Griffin was with him.
'Where was Nathaniel then?' I pondered and felt someone tap me on the shoulder. I turned to see it was the devil I had just thought of.
"Don't fail this time, Pearl." He flicked my forehead with his fingers and I winced from pain.
"Ouch." I glared at him and he winked at me before going to join the other Alphas under the tent. There, I saw Griffin staring at me like I had grown horns and I knew why.
I waved at him, and he snorted before looking away. His actions hurt, but I laughed anyway.
He was kinda adorable. One minute, being less snobbish and the next, being immature.
I looked around and noticed we were using the school's best basketball court. It was large and my heart brimmed with happiness.
'So I could get to play here again one day?' I pondered in disbelief as I bulcked my trainers. I opened my duffel bag to keep my phone when I saw a hairband.
I furrowed my brows in confusion as I brought it and turned it only to see the name Griffin inscribed on it.
Before I could stop myself, I smiled and wore it in my hair.
"Miss Pearl, we don't have all day, please." Director Alex scoffed as he threw me a death glare. I ignored him and continued what I was doing.
He had been trying to scold me since, but kept mute due to Elara's presence, but now she excused herself to make a call, his bravado shot up out of nowhere.
Too bad, he doesn't have my respect anymore. I got up and looked around the field again, feeling nostalgic as memories of me and the six Alphas with Lilith running around in laughter, flashed through my mind.
This field became banned after the unfortunate incident that happened here, some years back.
"Enough day-dreaming, time to play," Gittens yelled and I noticed two old men and a woman sitting under the tenth. Pearl arrived to join them and gave me a thumbs up.
So they were the judges while Director Alex was a Spector.
'Interesting.' I thought as I watched him walk into the court with a ball in his hand. Lilith and I came closer to him, and I noticed she was in a purple jersey and had Gitten's headband on.
"It's the tip-off." Director Alex yelled as he threw the ball up and before I
could jump to grab it, Lilith already did and ran to slam the ball into the basketball court.
