We were halfway through the ride, and I was planning on giving him the silent treatment the whole way if the question hadn't popped into my head.
"Can I take a look at Macy's case file?" I said, clearing my throat. He turned his gaze to me, "No, not at the moment," he replied.
"What do you want to know?" He asked. I pondered over the questions I had, then decided to go with it. Since I was heading to a meeting about it, I at least needed to know a good deal about her case. It would also help me understand why Esther was trying to protect those criminals. It was absolutely inhumane to even think about justifying what those assholes had done to Macy, let alone protect them.
"You said you knew them, who are they?" I said, anticipating that he might hold back and might not tell me such sensitive information.
"They are influential people within our pack, as to why they were able to get the evidence stolen," he said, looking somewhere far into the distance. For a moment, I wanted to stare at him and figure out whatever was going through that thick head of his. Sometimes, his gaze would travel far into the distance, seeing something I couldn't see while I would be there, watching him and wondering what he could possibly be imagining. I had never watched someone thinking so intriguingly before. That man was awakening new interests in me, and I didn't mind it at all now. The grudge I had against him was slowly dissipating, although I had still not forgiven him for taking Elio away from me, nor had he asked for it. Yet it was somewhere buried for now, like a memory I didn't want to relive. It was there, for sure, but too distant to bring back to the surface.
"It happened at the Estate after a distraction. A fire incident in my parents' chamber was what lured the guards away from there. Even though it was declared an accident and everybody eventually went back to their posts, it was too late." He told me, his voice almost hissing by the end. He was deeply unsettled with this like I was.
"There are 4 men involved. One of them is the son of my father's beta." His words left me shaken. I gasped lowly, a pained expression slowly taking over my features. "Tony Barrett's son?" I murmured in disbelief.
"Mark Barrett." He hissed out, shooting daggers somewhere into the distance. That revelation suddenly explained a lot. Tony Barrett was the beta of Zayden's father, Rowan Castillo. He was remarkable at his duties and throughout our world, he was known as one of the best betas. Zayden had given Drake the position of beta, and ever since then, I hadn't heard of Tony Barrett again. It was like his son was suddenly in the picture now, and unlike his father, he wasn't that nice of a man actually, he wasn't even a man. No real man would rape a woman. This entire thing was reshaping my opinion about the Barretts as hidden monsters among us.
"Does that mean his father is protecting him?" I questioned, dreading the answer. That was the only conclusion I could reach. No way in hell could a normal wolf in this pack have the audacity to steal evidence from the Alpha's house. I still couldn't understand why Esther was supporting them. She wasn't helpless, and she certainly wasn't someone one could intimidate easily, that I knew quite well. Then, what was making her do it? Either way, it was evil to do such a thing.
"I am afraid, yes," his voice was stern like he wanted to kill them both right then and there. "This is f****d up," I murmured. "What will happen if we couldn't get the evidence back?" I asked. It was the last hope of bringing them down; otherwise, Macy's injustice wouldn't be avenged, and many other innocent girls like her would have to face the same fate at the hands of those monsters.
"Then-" he began to say, but I cut him off.
"Then we can wait for Macy to wake up!" I almost jumped as it hit me that we might still have a chance even if the evidence was lost. He looked at me for a while, his shades no more on, and those gorgeous orbs of his assessing me as if I was a precious jewel he was suddenly afraid to lose.
"She can testify against them, and those criminals will be done for." I thought out loud as he continued to stare at me, amazed. Well, it wasn't supposed to be that hard to figure out. He could have figured it out himself too. He must have, and he was about to say something before I cut him off.
"Sorry, what were you saying?" I asked sheepishly. He shook his head, "Nothing you didn't already know."
Okay, well, he did know I had just beat him to it. My cheeks began to flush at my reaction earlier. Why did I have to jump like an i***t earlier as if I had just solved a years-old case? He threw me a look and a breathtaking smile appeared on his lips, which I only caught a glimpse of as he was looking away.
Soon, we arrived at the Estate. Its magnificent exterior stood tall and huge on the grand premise. It stood marvellously like always. A memory resurfaced as the car drove through its grand gates. The last time I was here, my life had drastically changed, and now here I was, with my mate with whom I was engaged, and the hate I had felt that day was slowly dissipating. I couldn't help but wonder what things would be like the next time I would be here. A shiver erupted in me at the thought of it.
Zayden got out and proceeded to help me. His chivalry was quite like the time he had treated my mother that day; instead, this time it was genuine. He extended a hand, and I took it. The warmth travelled from his skin to mine, giving me the comfort I didn't know I needed.
With one look and a nod, we began to make our way inside hand in hand.
