Chapter 6 – The Contract of Desire

442 Words
The silence in Dimitri’s office was thick enough to cut through. Ava sat across from him, her fingers curled into her lap, her eyes locked on the crisp white pages lying between them. The document he’d just handed her was unlike anything she’d ever seen. Not a legal contract in the traditional sense, but an agreement — raw, personal, laced with both opportunity and danger. “I don’t want your money,” she said quietly, lifting her gaze to meet his. Dimitri’s lips curved into a half-smile. “This isn’t about money. It’s about clarity.” She leaned back in the leather chair, the cool material brushing against the bare skin of her arms. “Clarity? This feels like control.” “Maybe,” he said. “But sometimes, clarity is the only way to keep two people from burning down the world around them.” Ava couldn’t deny the fire between them — it was wild and magnetic. Ever since their first encounter, something had been shifting. He touched her without laying a hand on her. He made her feel exposed without stripping a single piece of clothing. But now, with this… “arrangement”… he was asking for more. “What do you want from me?” she asked, searching his expression. Dimitri stood and walked around the desk until he was beside her. Towering. Confident. Dangerous. “I want you,” he said. “Without games. Without pretense. But on my terms.” Ava felt her breath catch. His nearness affected her more than she wanted to admit. “Why not just ask me to dinner like a normal person?” He chuckled. “Because nothing about us is normal, Ava. You know that.” She did. God, she did. There was a knock at the door. Dimitri’s assistant peeked in. “Your 4 o’clock has been moved to 4:30.” “Clear the rest of my day,” he said, not breaking eye contact with Ava. The assistant nodded and disappeared. Ava stood, her pulse racing. “You can’t just shut out the world like this.” “I can. I just did.” She should leave. Walk away. But her feet stayed planted. Her hand brushed against the document again. “Six months,” he said softly. “No distractions. No lies. Just you and me, Ava. Say yes.” Her mind screamed to run — but her heart whispered stay. And it was the whisper she obeyed. “I’ll think about it,” she said at last, walking toward the elevator. Dimitri didn’t follow. He simply watched her leave, a knowing smirk curving his lips.
