Chapter 20: The Devil You Know
Samantha POV…
“Watch your step.” He pointed to the rope in front of me. “You would have fallen. Be careful.” He pulled his hand away gently.
I watched him for a while before forcing a smile. I seriously wasn’t expecting that, but I had to be nice anyway. “Thank you for pointing that out.” I looked away immediately, the tension awkward.
“What’s wrong with you two?” Anna’s voice broke through. For a second, I had forgotten we were together. I looked up at her, wondering what she meant by that.
“Do you two know each other from before?” My heartbeat quickened as her questions rolled out. “The tension between you two is always hard to miss,” she continued, her eyes flying between Steven and me as if suspecting something. What was she up to?
