Chapter 3 — Whispers in the Dark

~ Celine POV ~ "Leave us," Damien commanded from the darkness outside my cell. "Alpha, pack regulations require two guards during prisoner detention," an enforcer replied. "I said leave," Damien repeated, his voice dropping until the underground hallway fell silent. "Wait at the top of the stairs." "Yes, Alpha," the enforcer answered. Footsteps retreated up the stairs, followed by the clatter of the upper door shutting. I sat on the cold floor, resting my back against the rock wall. Cold iron cuffs bound my wrists, locked to a chain that connected to an iron ring bolted into the bedrock floor. The chill seeped through my thin sweater, but the anger burning in my chest kept me awake. A key turned inside the lock. The barred door swung open with a low creak. Damien stepped into the cell. He didn't carry a weapon, but his dark coat had dry mud clinging to the hem from his trip to the border. He shut the door behind him and stood over me, his shadow stretching across the floor under the lantern glow. "Did you come down here to watch them prepare the executioner?" I asked, looking up at him. Damien stared down at me, his hands resting at his sides. "I came for the truth." "I gave you the truth in my bedroom," I replied, rattling the iron links between my wrists. "You chose to ignore every word." "You expect me to ignore Bloodcrest gold sitting in your desk?" he asked, stepping closer. "You expect me to ignore Garrett lying dead in the dirt?" "I expect you to use your brain, Damien," I answered, pulling against the chain. "Why would I keep enemy coins in an unlocked cabinet? If I sold out the pack, why would I sign my own name on the dispatch ledger?" "Guards found the courier carrying that ledger," Damien said, folding his arms across his chest. "Your signature was on the bottom of the page." "Who interrogated that courier?" I asked, leaning forward against the pull of the iron. "Did you question him yourself, or did Vance handle the interrogation before you reached the border?" Damien frowned. "Vance secured the prisoner at the perimeter fence." "And what time did Vance capture him?" I asked. "Four in the morning," Damien replied. "Garrett's patrol wasn't attacked until five," I said, my voice steady. "If Vance caught a courier with our defense routes at four, why didn't he sound the perimeter alarms immediately? Why did he wait until after Garrett's squad was ambushed before showing you the ledger?" Damien went still. He didn't answer. "Because Vance needed Garrett dead," I said. "He needed a tragedy so terrible that you wouldn't ask questions. He knew you'd be blinded by grief. He knew you'd look at my name on that paper, drag me into the courtyard, and hand the council the excuse they needed to push their northern alliance." "Vance served this pack for forty years," Damien said, though the certainty had drained from his tone. "He served my father." "Vance hates that you took the Alpha seat at twenty-one," I countered. "He wants the North to control this territory. He was down in that basement five minutes after you kissed me last night, Damien. He saw how you looked at me. He knew you'd never sign the contract with Veronica if you found your mate." Damien stepped closer until his shoes touched the hem of my pants. "The council wouldn't sacrifice twelve warriors just to force a wedding." "Vance didn't care about those warriors," I said, looking up into his eyes. "He cared about breaking your independence. He knew Garrett was the only veteran captain who backed your claim without demanding concessions for the older families. With Garrett gone, who defends you on the council floor?" Damien stared at me, his jaw working as my words sank in. "Even if Vance orchestrated the ambush, the evidence against you is signed under your archive seal. The council has the ledger. The courier testified under oath that he received the dispatch from your station." "Because someone broke into my desk after midnight," I said. "I cataloged boundary deeds until twelve-thirty. You were there, Damien. You saw me lock the ledger away. If I wanted to sell defense codes to Bloodcrest, why would I stay in the records room arguing with you over an old map?" "To keep me distracted while an accomplice carried the papers," he murmured, though his voice lacked conviction. "You really believe that?" I asked, a bitter laugh escaping my throat. "You think I planned your arrival? You came to the archives unannounced. How could I have staged a meeting I didn't know was going to happen?" Damien didn't answer. He dropped to one knee directly in front of me, bringing his face level with mine. His grey eyes searched mine in the dim lantern light. "You felt the bond last night," he said, his voice dropping low. "Tell me you didn't use that to manipulate me." "I didn't use anything," I replied, holding his gaze. "The Moon Goddess chose us. I didn't ask for an Alpha to walk into my archives, and I didn't ask for a mate bond that could get me executed. But I didn't lie to you, Damien. I've never lied to you." He reached out and caught my chin in his fingers. The contact sent a jolt of heat through my skin. The mate bond surged between us, powerful and demanding, making my breath catch in my throat. My wolf answered his touch instantly, leaning into the warmth of his palm despite the cold chains holding me down. Damien let out a ragged breath. His thumb brushed across my lower lip, his pupils dilating until the grey irises disappeared. "Damien, don't," I whispered, though my voice shook. "You think I want to feel this?" he asked, his voice strained with conflict. "My wolf hasn't stopped clawing at my ribs since I locked you in this room. Every instinct I have is telling me to tear down these bars and take you away from here." "Then unlock the chains," I said, looking into his eyes. Damien reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small bronze key. He leaned down behind my feet, inserted the key into the thick iron clasp, and turned it. The mechanism released with a dull click, freeing the long chain from the floor ring. He stood up, pulling me to my feet by my chained wrists. "You're free to move," he murmured, his hands sliding up my arms to my shoulders. "That's not what I asked for," I whispered, staring up at him. "Clear my name." "I can't stop the tribunal," he replied, his face inches from mine. "Not yet." "Then let go of me," I said, fighting the desperate pull in my chest. "Don't touch me like you care while you leave me in cuffs." He didn't let go. He slid his fingers into my hair, tilting my head back. "I can't." "You can," I whispered. "You're the Alpha." "Not when I'm with you," he growled. Damien pulled my mouth to his. The kiss began with fierce desperation, fueled by grief, anger, and the undeniable pull of our bond. He backed me against the barred wall of the cell, his hands gripping my waist. The cold iron of the bars pressed into my back, but the heat of his body consumed every other sensation. I parted my lips, answering the hunger in his kiss. My chained hands found his shoulders, gripping the dark cloth of his coat as his mouth moved hungrily over mine. The fear and exhaustion that had weighed on me all day vanished beneath his touch. "Celine," he groaned against my mouth, trailing kisses down the line of my jaw to the sensitive skin of my throat. "Damien," I breathed, my fingers tangling in the collar of his shirt. "If they find you down here..." "Let them find me," he muttered against my neck. "You're my mate." He lifted me, his hands supporting my thighs as he held me against the bars. I wrapped my legs around his waist, pulling him close as his lips found mine again. His mouth claimed mine harder, teeth scraping my lower lip until I gasped. The chains between my wrists rattled as I locked my arms around his neck, the iron biting into my skin. Damien shoved my sweater up, his rough hands dragging the clothes over my breasts. He pinched one n****e hard between his fingers, twisting until a sharp sound broke from my mouth. "Quiet," he ordered against my mouth. "You don't get to make noise unless I say." I tried to answer, but he pushed two fingers between my lips, forcing them deep. "Suck. Show me how you take orders." I closed my lips around them, my tongue working as he f****d them in and out of my mouth. His eyes stayed locked on mine, grey nearly gone, pupils blown wide. When he pulled his fingers free, they shone wet. He shoved my pants and underwear down just far enough to bare me, then dragged those same fingers between my legs, spreading the slick that had already gathered. "Already this wet for the man who locked you up," he said, voice low and rough. "Look at you. Cuffed, accused, and still dripping for your Alpha." He thrust two fingers into me without warning, curling them hard against the spot that made my thighs shake. My head fell back against the bars with a soft clang. He pumped them deep, thumb grinding over my c**t in tight circles. "Tell me who you belong to," he demanded. "You," I managed, breath catching. "Louder." He added a third finger, stretching me open, the burn sharp and perfect. "Say it like you mean it, Celine." "I belong to you," I said, voice breaking on the words. "That's right." He yanked his fingers free, ignoring the soft sound of protest that left me. In one motion he freed himself, shoved the head of his c**k against my entrance, and drove in to the hilt. The stretch forced a choked cry from my throat. He covered my mouth with his palm, pinning me harder against the bars as he started thrusting deep, punishing strokes that rocked my body with every snap of his hips. The chains clinked with each movement. Cold iron dug into my back while the heat of him filled me over and over. "You feel that?" he growled against my ear, palm still sealed over my lips. "That's me taking what's mine before the whole pack tries to put a rope around your neck. You don't get to die without knowing who owns this cunt." I moaned into his hand. He pulled it away only long enough to spit into his palm, then reached between us and rubbed the wetness over my c**t in hard, relentless circles while he f****d me. My legs tightened around his waist. He shifted his grip under my thighs, spreading me wider, and slamming deeper. "Beg me to mark you," he ordered. "Beg like the prisoner you are." "Please," I whispered, the word torn from me. "Mark me. Please, Damien—" He bit down on the side of my throat, not bruising my throat, but hard enough that the claim would show for days. The pressure and the next brutal thrust pushed me over. My body clenched around him as the orgasm ripped through me, my vision going white at the edges. He didn't slow down. He f****d me through it, chasing his own release with short, vicious strokes until he buried himself to the root and came with a low, guttural sound against my neck. For a long moment we stayed locked together, our breath harsh in the quiet cell. Then the distant bell began to toll from the courtyard above. One, two, three. The morning assembly bell. The cold air rushed back into the cell as Damien stepped away, fastening the silver buttons of his coat with hurried fingers. His breathing was ragged, but the warmth in his grey eyes was already freezing over, replaced by the rigid mask of an Alpha. I sat back on the floor, leaning against the cold rock wall. My wrists burned beneath the iron cuffs, my clothes were rumpled, and an unbearable ache settled in my chest. "Damien?" I whispered, looking up at his back. He stood with his hand on the iron latch of the door, his shoulders tense. He didn't turn around. "The council is assembling in the Grand Hall," he said, his tone flat. "Is that all you have to say?" I asked, my voice trembling with hurt. "After what we just did?" "What happened here doesn't change what's waiting upstairs," he replied quietly. "The elders are furious. The warriors want blood for Garrett's squad. If I dismiss the charges without evidence, the pack will mutiny." "So you took what you wanted in the dark, and now you're walking away in the daylight," I said, a bitter tear escaping down my cheek. Damien turned his head slightly, his jaw clenched tight. "Listen to me carefully, Celine. When you stand before the council, don't lose your temper. Don't challenge Vance directly, and don't confess to anything. Let me control the questioning." "You think you control Vance?" I asked, wiping my cheek with the back of my chained hand. "He's five steps ahead of you." "I'm keeping you alive," he said firmly. He knelt by my feet, grabbed the loose end of the chain, and locked it back into the iron floor ring. He turned the bronze key, securing the anchor with a final click. Footsteps echoed from the top of the stairs, accompanied by the clatter of weapons and armor. "They're here," Damien muttered, standing up. He opened the cell door, stepped out into the hallway, and pulled the barred gate shut behind him. The lock engaged with a hollow thud. Elder Vance descended the staircase, followed by four armed tribunal enforcers and the pack executioner, whose face was hidden beneath a dark black hood. Vance stopped in front of the cell, glancing between Damien and the closed gate. A cruel smile touched the old man's lips. "Early morning interrogation, Alpha?" Vance asked smoothly. "Did the traitor give you any useful names?" "The prisoner maintains her innocence," Damien replied, his voice devoid of emotion. "The tribunal will proceed according to pack law." "Of course," Vance said, turning to the enforcers behind him. "The Grand Hall is packed. Every elder, warrior, and family head is waiting for justice." Vance pointed at the cell door. "Unchain the prisoner. Bring her up." The lead enforcer unlocked the gate. Two guards entered the cell, unlocked my chain from the floor ring, and dragged me to my feet. They pulled my arms behind my back and shoved me out into the corridor. I stumbled slightly, but I kept my chin lifted as I walked past Vance. As the guards forced me toward the stairs, I locked eyes with Damien. He stood against the wall, motionless, watching me with a cold, unreadable stare. "Walk, Brooks," the guard behind me barked, shoving my shoulder. I didn't break eye contact with Damien as I passed him. "May the Moon Goddess judge you for what you do today, Alpha." Damien didn't flinch. He turned and followed the guards up the iron steps toward the blinding morning light. At the top of the stairwell, the tall iron doors opened to reveal the Grand Hall, filled with the deafening roar of hundreds of angry wolves screaming for an execution. Vance leaned close to my ear as the guards pushed me onto the platform. "Smile for the crowd, girl," Vance whispered. "Your Alpha already signed your death sentence.”
