Chapter 4 — The Severed Bond

~ Celine POV ~ "Traitors don't get to speak, Brooks," the guard behind me barked, shoving me forward onto the raised platform. The roar of the crowd hit me like a wall of sound. Hundreds of pack members filled the Grand Hall, packed shoulder to shoulder beneath the towering granite arches. Warriors slammed their fists against the iron railings, their voices blending into a single, deafening chant. "Execution! Blood for Garrett! Death to the traitor!" I stumbled across the dark granite floor, the iron links around my wrists rattling with every step. Two enforcers forced me down to my knees at the center of the platform. The cold rock bit into my skin, but I refused to bow my head. I kept my gaze fixed on the dais ahead. Damien sat in the central Alpha chair. His dark coat was buttoned to his throat, his expression rigid and cold. He looked down at me, but his grey eyes showed no warmth, giving away nothing of what had passed between us in the dark only hours ago. Elder Vance stepped to the front of the platform, raising both hands to quiet the assembly. The shouting died down to a low murmur. "Members of Shadow Ridge," Vance declared, his voice carrying across the entire hall. "At five o'clock this morning, twelve of our finest border guards were ambushed and slaughtered at the eastern stream. Among the dead was Garrett, our most respected warrior captain." Furious shouts erupted from the front rows where the warrior squads stood. "We demand justice!" a scarred warrior yelled. "You'll have it," Vance promised, turning toward me with a sneer. He lifted the leather ledger and the pouch of gold for the entire assembly to see. "Security intercepted the traitor's dispatch. Celine Brooks used her archive clearance to copy our patrol routes and deliver them to Bloodcrest. In exchange, she took enemy gold." "That's a lie!" I shouted, struggling against the guards holding my arms. "The dispatch was sent after midnight, but the courier was captured at four in the morning! If Vance intercepted the route map at four, why didn't he sound the alarm before Garrett's squad walked into the trap at five?" A sudden silence fell over the front rows. Several younger warriors exchanged puzzled glances. Vance's face flushed with anger. "Silence the prisoner!" The guard on my left slammed his fist into my ribs. The breath left my lungs in a painful gasp, knocking me down against the floorboards. "She attempts to sow division among us," Vance continued quickly, raising his voice over the murmurs. "The evidence is undeniable. Her signature is on the record. Her father's folders hid the enemy gold. Under pack law, the penalty for treason during wartime is immediate execution by the silver blade." Vance turned toward the dark-robed executioner waiting at the side of the platform. The executioner stepped forward, drawing a long silver sword from its scabbard. The blade caught the morning light with a pale gleam. "Alpha Damien," Vance said, turning to face the upper dais. "As head of the Council, I call upon you to confirm the sentence. Order her execution." Every eye in the hall turned to Damien. The silence in the room became suffocating. The elders on the council leaned forward in their seats, while the warriors watched their young Alpha with tense, demanding stares. Damien slowly rose from his chair. He walked to the front of the dais, his hands resting at his sides. He looked down at Vance, then past him to the crowd. "Twelve of our brothers died this morning," Damien said, his voice deep and steady. "Their blood demands an answer. But as Alpha of Shadow Ridge, the final judgment belongs to me alone." "The law is clear, Alpha," Vance argued, stepping closer. "Treason requires death." "The law grants the Alpha sovereign discretion over capital punishment," Damien countered, his tone leaving no room for debate. "Celine Brooks served this pack in the archives without incident for three years. In recognition of her family's past service, I commute the death penalty." The crowd erupted in furious shouts. "No mercy for spies!" someone screamed from the back. "She killed Garrett!" another voice yelled. Vance took a step forward, his jaw tight with rage. "You can't dismiss her crimes, Damien! If you spare a confessed traitor, the Council will declare you unfit to lead!" "I haven't dismissed her crimes," Damien said, stepping down the stairs of the dais until he stood directly in front of Vance. "I commute the execution to permanent exile. She'll be stripped of her rank, stripped of her name, and banished beyond our borders forever. If she ever sets foot on Shadow Ridge territory again, she'll be killed on sight." Vance narrowed his eyes, calculating his next move. A cruel smile slowly returned to the elder's face. "Exile is permitted under the ancient code," Vance said, his voice loud enough for everyone to hear. "Provided the customary condition is met. A traitor cast into the wilderness cannot retain any spiritual claim to this pack. If you grant her exile, Alpha, you must sever her mate bond before the assembly." My heart stopped beating. I looked up at Damien, my breath catching in my throat. The entire hall fell into a stunned, breathless hush. The elders stared in shock, while the crowd murmured in confusion. Vance had laid his final trap. If Damien refused, he admitted to harboring a mate accused of treason, destroying his authority. If he agreed, he would destroy our bond forever. Damien stood motionless. His grey eyes locked onto mine. For a fraction of a second, I saw the torment behind his cold mask, the silent struggle of an Alpha cornered by his own laws. "Unlock her chains," Damien commanded quietly. "Alpha?" the guard asked, hesitating. "I said unlock them," Damien repeated, his voice hard. The guard fumbled with the bronze key, releasing the iron cuffs from my wrists. The thick bands fell to the floor with a hollow clatter. I pushed myself up from the floor, standing on shaking legs. My wrists were bruised and scraped, but I held my chin up and looked straight into Damien's eyes. "Don't do this, Damien," I whispered, the words meant only for him. "You know what happens if you break the bond. It'll destroy us." Damien stepped closer until he stood an arm's length away. His face was pale, his jaw set in a rigid line. "This is the only way you walk out of this hall alive," he said, his voice barely audible beneath the breathing of the crowd. "I'd rather die by the silver blade than let you do this," I replied, tears burning behind my eyes. "I won't let them kill you," he whispered. "You are killing me," I said. "You're just doing it where your hands stay clean." Damien closed his eyes for a single second, drawing a slow breath. When he opened them, the grey was cold as ice. He raised his right hand toward the ceiling, addressing the assembly. "I, Damien Black, Alpha of the Shadow Ridge Pack, invoke the ancient right of severance," he announced, his voice ringing through every corner of the Grand Hall. The words felt like a freezing blade sliding into my chest. "Damien, please," I pleaded, my voice breaking. He looked down at me, his eyes dead and unyielding. "I formally reject you, Celine Brooks. I sever the bond forged by the Moon Goddess. I cast you out from my heart, from my blood, and from my pack. You are nothing to me." The rejection tore through my soul. A blinding agony exploded behind my ribs, ripping through the spiritual tether that connected our wolves. It felt as if half of my chest had been torn away, leaving an open, bleeding void where the warmth had lived. A scream ripped from my throat. My knees gave out, and I crashed onto the hard granite floor. I curled into a ball, gasping for air that wouldn't fill my lungs, pressing both hands against my chest as the mate bond shattered into dust. The pain was unbearable, blinding my vision with flashes of gray and black. Above me, Damien stood tall, but I saw his hand tremble against his coat before he pulled it behind his back. "The bond is broken," Vance announced gleefully. "Take the outcast to the gates!" Two enforcers grabbed my arms and hauled me off the floor. My legs were numb, unable to support my weight, but they dragged me backward down the platform steps. I forced my head up through the pain. I looked at Damien one last time. He stood on the raised dais, surrounded by his elders, watching me with an unreadable, frozen expression. "Traitor!" the crowd screamed, throwing insults as the guards dragged me down the central aisle. "Outcast!" The enforcers hauled me through the thick entrance doors, down the frozen gravel paths of the compound, and toward the southern boundary line. A howling winter wind slammed into us as we reached the outer perimeter. Snow whipped across the frozen ground in blinding white sheets, burying the path ahead. The guards dragged me to the iron boundary gate and unlatched the thick bar. "Step across, outcast," the lead guard ordered, shoving me through the opening. I fell forward into the snowdrifts, freezing powder burning against my scraped palms and face. The iron gate slammed shut behind me, the lock engaging with a final, definitive crash. "If you ever cross that line again, your life is forfeit," the guard yelled through the bars over the howling wind. I lay in the snow for a long moment, the freezing cold biting through my thin clothes. Inside my chest, the empty void of the broken bond throbbed with a hollow, burning ache. The warmth of the young girl who loved books and believed in fated mates was dead, frozen beneath the ice. I pushed myself up onto my hands and knees, then forced myself to stand. I wrapped my arms around my bruised ribs, feeling the lingering ache of the guard's blow and the memory of Damien's touch in the dark cell that now felt a lifetime away. I turned and looked back through the blizzard at the glowing, distant towers of the pack house. I wiped the icy tears from my face and let the cold settle into my bones. "Enjoy your crown, Damien," I whispered into the howling storm. "Because the next time I step foot on Shadow Ridge soil, I will burn your empire to the ground.”
