Chapter 10: Never Look Back
Luna stood at the entrance of the ancient temple, staring at Kael.
For a moment, everything around her disappeared.
She remembered the ceremony.
His cold voice.
“I reject you as my mate.”
The pain returned, but this time it didn't control her.
Kael stepped forward.
“Luna, please come with me.”
Damon moved between them.
“She isn't going anywhere.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“This doesn't concern you, Damon.”
“It concerns me now.”
Luna raised her hand.
“Stop.”
Both Alphas turned toward her.
Luna walked forward.
“Kael, why are you here?”
His expression softened.
“I came to protect you.”
She laughed bitterly.
“You already had the chance to protect me.”
Kael lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“You rejected me because your father ordered you to.”
Kael looked shocked.
“Who told you?”
“I saw it myself.”
Silence.
Kael finally admitted, “It's true.”
Luna's heart tightened.
“But there is something you don't know.”
“What?”
“My father wasn't the only person searching for the Moon Queen.”
Kael looked toward the surrounding wolves.
“Someone inside my pack has betrayed me.”
Adrian suddenly stepped forward.
“Who?”
Kael's eyes darkened.
“I don't know yet.”
A loud howl came from the forest.
The wolves surrounding the temple began moving.
Kael looked at Luna.
“You need to leave. Now.”
Luna shook her head.
“No.”
“Luna, they're coming for you.”
“I spent years running from people who wanted to control my destiny.”
She touched the silver mark on her shoulder.
“I'm not running anymore.”
Damon smiled faintly.
“Good.”
Kael looked at him angrily.
“You're making a mistake trusting him.”
Luna looked from one Alpha to the other.
“I don't trust either of you completely.”
Both men fell silent.
“But I trust myself.”
The silver mark suddenly flashed.
A powerful wave of energy spread across the temple grounds.
Every wolf dropped to its knees.
Luna stood in the center of the silver light.
And somewhere beyond the mountains, an ancient voice whispered:
The Queen has chosen herself.
