Chapter 2: Secrets in the Shadows
Elara didn’t dare look back as she stumbled through the clearing. Her lungs burned, her legs
trembling beneath her. The weight of the man’s words hung over her like a storm cloud. They’re
coming for you.
The silence around her was deafening. The forest that had been alive with noises mere
moments ago now felt eerily still, as though it were holding its breath. Her heart thundered in her
chest, and her mind raced with questions. Who was that man? How did he know her name?
And what did he mean about the treaty?
She staggered toward the dirt road that wound its way back to Ashbourne. The cold night air bit
at her skin, but she barely felt it. Her focus was a replica glow of the town’s lights in the dicentra
beacon of safety, or at least what she hoped was safety.
As she neared the edge of the forest, a Demeanour came out behind her, stopping her dead in
her tracks.
“You dropped this.
”
Elara spun around, her breath catching in her throat. The man from the forest stood a few feet
away, holding the crumpled map in his hand. His silver-streaked hair gleamed under the
moonlight, and his intense gaze pinned her in place.
“Who are you?” she demanded, trying to keep her voice steady despite the fear coursing
through her veins.
He stepped closer, and she instinctively backed away.
“I just saved your life,
” he said flatly.
“The least you can do is hear me out.
”
Elara’s fingers curled into the centre to comedies.
“You didn’t answer my question.
”
The man sighed, his shoulders relaxing slightly.
“My name is Kael. I… used to be part of the
Blackridge Pack.
”
Her eyes widened.
“You’re a wolf.
”
“Was,
” he corrected, his tone clipped.
“I don’t run with the pack anymore.
”
She eyed him warily, unsure whether to believe him.
“Why did you help me?”
Kael hesitated, his jaw tightening.
“Because you’re in danger. And if you don’t listen to me,

Elara crossed her arms, willing herself to appear braver than she felt.
“You still haven’t

Kael glanced at the map in his hand before tossing it to her. She caught it clumsily, her fingers

She shook her head, taking a step back.
“I don’t understand. What does this have to do with
me?”
Kael’s gaze softened slightly, though his expression remained grim.
“Because of who you are.
Your family wasn’t just human, Elara. Your mother… she was one of us.
”
Her heart skipped a beat.
“That’s impossible. My mother was human.
”
“She was,

The words hit her likecentresical blow. Her legs felt weak, and she stumbled backwards,
shaking her head in disbelief.
“You’re lying.

Kael didn’t flinch.
