Chapter 5: Awakening the Beast
Elara paced the length of the cabin, her thoughts racing. The surge of power she’d felt moments
ago still buzzed faintly beneath her skin, like an ember refusing to extinguish. Her hands
trembled as she flexed her fingers, half expecting another wave of energy to burst forth.
Kael leaned against the table, his arms crossed as he watched her. His calm demeanor only
added to her frustration.
“You need to explain what just happened,
” she said, her voice sharp.
“That wasn’t normal. That
wasn’t human.
”
“You’re right,
” Kael said evenly.
“It wasn’t.
”
Elara stopped pacing and glared at him.
“Then what was it?”
Kael sighed, running a hand through his hair.
“I told you before. You’re a hybrid—human and
wolf. That power you just used? It’s your wolf side waking up.
”
She shook her head, refusing to accept it.
“I’m not a wolf. I’ve never shifted, never felt anything
like this before.
”
Kael pushed off the table and stepped closer, his gaze intense.
“It’s been dormant because you
were raised human. But now that Fenrir’s pack is hunting you, your instincts are kicking in.
They’re trying to protect you.
”
Elara turned away, her mind struggling to process his words. Her whole life, she’d felt different,
out of place. But this? This was beyond anything she could have imagined.
“What if I don’t want this?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Kael hesitated before answering.
“You don’t have a choice. The power is part of you, whether
you like it or not. And if you don’t learn to control it, it will consume you.
”
The weight of his words settled heavily on her shoulders. She turned back to him, her eyes
burning with determination.
“Then teach me.
”
Kael arched an eyebrow, clearly surprised by her resolve.
“It’s not that simple. Learning to
control your wolf side takes time and discipline. It’s dangerous.
”
“I don’t care,
” Elara said, her voice steady.
“If I’m going to survive this, I need to know what I’m
dealing with.
”
Kael studied her for a long moment before nodding.
“All right. But first, we need to get out of
here. Fenrir’s wolves will be back, and next time, they won’t run.
”
Elara grabbed the map from the table and folded it carefully.
“Where do we go?”
Kael gestured toward the back door.
“There’s a safe house in the mountains, about a day’s hike
from here. We’ll regroup there.
”
As they stepped out into the cool night air, Elara couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being
watched. She scanned the shadows, but the forest was silent, save for the rustling of leaves in
the breeze.
Kael led the way, his movements quiet and deliberate. Elara followed closely, clutching the map
like a lifeline.
They walked for hours, the forest growing denser with each passing mile. The moon hung low in
the sky, casting long shadows that danced eerily across the ground.
“Tell me more about Fenrir,
” Elara said, breaking the silence.
Kael glanced back at her, his expression grim.
“He’s the Alpha of the Blackridge Pack. Ruthless,
cunning, and powerful. He doesn’t just want the Lunar Stone—he wants to unite all the packs
under his rule. With that kind of power, no one would be able to stop him.
”
“And you used to be part of his pack?”
Kael’s jaw tightened.
“A long time ago. Before I realized what he was really after.
”
Elara hesitated before asking her next question.
“Why did you leave?”
Kael’s steps faltered for a moment before he continued.
“Because I made a choice. I couldn’t
follow someone who would sacrifice everything for power.
”
The raw emotion in his voice made her chest tighten. She wanted to press further but decided
against it.
As dawn began to break, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, they reached a rocky
outcrop overlooking a valley. Kael stopped, his posture tense.
“This is it,
” he said, pointing to a narrow path winding down the mountain.
“The safe house is
just ahead.
”
But as they descended, a strange sound reached Elara’s ears—a low, guttural growl that sent a
shiver down her spine.
“Do you hear that?” she whispered.
Kael nodded, his eyes scanning the trees.
“Stay close.
”
They moved cautiously, the growls growing louder with each step. Suddenly, a massive figure
stepped out from the shadows, its eyes glowing red.
It wasn’t like the wolves they’d encountered before. This creature was larger, more primal, its fur
bristling with an unnatural energy.
Kael cursed under his breath.
“A Shadow Wolf. Fenrir must’ve sent it to track us.
”
The creature snarled, baring its teeth as it crouched low, preparing to attack.
Elara’s heart raced, but instead of fear, she felt the same energy stirring within her—the same
power that had saved her in the cabin.
Kael drew his dagger, his gaze never leaving the Shadow Wolf.
“Elara, listen to me. Run. Now.
”
But she didn’t move. Her hands began to glow faintly, the energy within her building to a
crescendo.
“I’m not running,
” she said, her voice steady.
Kael glanced at her, his eyes widening as he saw the light emanating from her.
“Elara, what are
you—
”
Before he could finish, the Shadow Wolf lunged, and Elara raised her hands, unleashing a
blinding surge of energy that lit up the forest like daylight.
When the light faded, the Shadow Wolf was gone, leaving only a scorch mark on the ground.
Kael stared at her in disbelief.
“You just destroyed a Shadow Wolf.
”
Elara’s legs gave out, and she sank to the ground, her breath coming in short gasps.
“I don’t
know how I did that,
” she said, her voice trembling.
Kael crouched beside her, his expression a mix of awe and concern.
“You’re stronger than I
thought. But that kind of power comes at a cost. You need to learn how to control it.
”
Elara nodded weakly, her mind spinning. The weight of what she’d done—and what she might
become—settled heavily on her.
For the first time, she truly understood what was at stake.
And there was no turning back.
