Chapter 3: Something Strange

Damon P.O.V I’ve been watching her ever since I met her. Ever since she came to Westfield High. I know almost everything about her. But the girl sitting three rows up in English class is not the same girl I know. Ava finally claimed to be Moretti and not Miller. And she looked Kathy in the eye and dared her to blink first. I close my notebook. Something strange. Ava would never do this. She’s so... not her. Real calm. --- *First period: I don’t have English.* I do now. I have to keep an eye on her. I walked in late. Nobody questioned Salvatore money. That’s rule #1 of Westfield High: if your last name builds buildings, you can build your own schedule. I picked the back corner. She also walks in late. Doesn’t scan the room like last year. She doesn’t even look at Josh. It is so strange. She doesn’t flinch or anything when Cindy “accidentally” kicks her backpack. Instead she stares at her. Like — I swear I could see Cindy scared. She sits alone. Back straight. And starts watching. Like she’s casing the place. Just like me. I swear I like who Ava is becoming now. --- *After school.* I watch from my car. The Moretti SUV pulls up. Tony opens the door. She slides in like she’s done it a thousand times. Last year she always walked three blocks even though it was raining. I once heard her tell her dad that she wanted to be normal. I guess normal is gone. As they pull out of the driveway, she glances at my car. Right at me. She can’t see me. Or I swear she knows I’m here. I pull out my phone. Because something is wrong with Ava Moretti. And I’m going to find out what
