The full moon illuminated the barren land beneath the velvety dark. Laughter and music wafted through the air as evening arrived, and with it, cooler temperatures. Holed up in an abandoned ice cream shop, Spyder’s home held round, bistro-style tables, chairs, and a jukebox. Affectionately called The Hub, the row of now-vacant homes and businesses and retail stores stretched a few blocks from Coronado Mall. Inside, they took advantage of the cooler temperatures. Candles licked at the air, burning bright in the gathering dark. Along the floor, sleeping bags lay bunched up in corners and the alcoves created beneath tables.
