Chapter Six

Claire's pov Golden sunlight spilled through the curtains, bathing the bedroom in a soft warm glow. I slowly fluttered my eyes open, the light making me squint as I shifted beneath the blankets. For a minute I forgot where I was until the warmth beside me registered. Cole, my mate. My breath hitched when I saw his arm draped around my waist, keeping me close against his chest. I remained still not wanting to move and ruin his peaceful sleep. Never in my life had I woken up like this before, in a warm bed with the warmth of the sun and with someone beside me but he wasn't just anyone he was my mate, the one destined for me. The sheets felt soft against my skin, and for once my body didn't ache from sleeping on the thin mattress in the omega quarters. Slowly but carefully I tilted my head, studying his sleeping face. Without his polite smile and grim expression. He seemed calm and almost younger. My chest tightened strangely. Maybe this was what having a mate was supposed to feel like. Cole stirred slightly before opening his eyes. His gaze immediately landed on me. “You’re staring,” he muttered, his morning voice rough. Heat rushed to my cheeks instantly. “I wasn’t—” A small amused smile tugged at his lips as he pulled me a little closer. “Relax mate.” My heart beat unevenly at the closeness. I always thought that when I meet my mate he won't want to take a second look at me and that he'd be embarrassed of me. But I was completely wrong. "Whats wrong?" Cole asked, his voice laced with concern. "Now that we're mates I'm sure my family is going to find out," I said, my voice soft. "We can't let anyone know atleast not for a while until I've figured out a way to get us out of here." I nodded. "You're right, they can't find out. If they do I'm not exactly sure what my father would do." He leaned closer, tucking a strand of my hair behind my ear. "You don't need to fear them anymore Claire," he said. His voice was low and steady, carrying a quiet confidence. "I'm here now, I'll always protect you no matter what," he added. A peaceful warmth settled over me, leaving me content and relaxed. Since growing up I've never had anyone to protect or care about me. I never had the chance of meeting my mother nor do I know what she looks like. Everyone said that she was Michael's mistress and after she had given birth to me no one had ever seen her again. She didn't want me, she abandoned me and left to live a better life. "You okay?" Cole's voice cut through my thoughts. I turned to him smiling. "I'm fine." "You sure?" he asked, his gaze softening. "Yes, I am." He pulled me against his chest, pressing his lips against mind. The kiss was warm and careful, filled with unspoken emotion. My fingers brushed along his shoulder, holding him closer while the world around us seemed to disappear. He slowly drew away. "I don't mind staying all day in bed with you but I have duties," he said, his eyes flickered between my eyes and my lips. "I understand and I also need to go or else Cassandra will bring down the house," I said getting up but before I could Cole gripped my arm, stopping me. I turned around facing him. "Don't work too hard and don't let anyone hurt you and if they do let me know I'll deal with them in my own way." My heartbeat quickened, not from fear this time, but from pure happiness. Cole truly cared about me. I smiled. "I'll try not too and as for them hurting me you know that can't be stopped." "When you're done return here and not to the quarters." My brows knitted. "But wouldn't they start suspecting us? I mean the other Omega's would notice I'm not there and-" "Don't worry about them," he said cutting me off gently. "Just leave it to me." "Okay," I murmured. _______________________________________________________ When I reached the kitchen I saw Kimberly standing by the stove, preparing breakfast. She didn't notice me because she had her back to me. I rushed toward her, tapping her on her shoulder. She spun around, her eyes widened, the spatula in her hand slipped and fell on the floor as she pulled me into her arms. "You have no idea how happy I am to see you. I was worried sick about you but then Cole told me that you were fine," she said pulling away. "Yeah he saved my life and then I found out we were mates." "You're so lucky," she said, squeezing my arm. "After everything you've been through you deserve to be happy." A soft smile touched my lips as the memory replayed in my mind of how Cole treated me with care, he was so sweet and gentle. "So I'm guessing you two already completed the bond?" My cheeks warmed slightly. "No not completely," I whispered. Kimberly frowned. "What do you mean?" She looked down at her hands, suddenly feeling exposed. "Oh I get it," Kimberly smirked. "And how was it? Was he good?" "Kimberly," I scolded, playfully hitting her arm. "That's non of your business." "Well from the way you keep blushing says it all." "I'm not blushing," I retorted. She exhaled, turning to the stove. "You are and by the way you smell like him."
