“Tell me the truth.”
My voice trembled.
Across the empty classroom, Kang Ji-hyun stood completely still.
His white school shirt was stained with blood.
Not his.
Mine.
He looked at me with an expression I'd never seen before.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
“Ha-eun,” he whispered.
“Who was she?”
He said nothing.
I stepped closer.
“The girl in the photograph.”
His jaw tightened.
“Don't.”
“Why?”
“Because once you know the truth, you can't go back.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Go back to what?”
He looked at me.
“To the girl you were before you came here.”
My heart stopped.
Then the classroom door opened.
Lee Tae-jun stood there.
His eyes immediately went to Ji-hyun.
Then to me.
Then to the blood on my sleeve.
His face changed.
“Ha-eun…”
I turned toward him.
“Tae-jun.”
He didn't move.
“Tell me,” I said.
He looked at Ji-hyun.
Ji-hyun looked back at him.
Something passed between them.
Something they had both been hiding from me.
I suddenly understood.
They knew.
Both of them.
My hands began shaking.
“You knew,” I whispered.
Neither answered.
“You knew about my mother.”
Tae-jun looked away.
That was all the answer I needed.
I stepped backward.
“You lied to me.”
“Ha-eun—”
“Both of you.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“How long?”
Tae-jun finally looked at me.
“Twelve years.”
The room went silent.
Twelve years.
The exact amount of time my mother had been gone.
I looked at Ji-hyun.
“And your family?”
His eyes lowered.
“Yes.”
I felt like the floor had disappeared beneath me.
“What happened twelve years ago?”
Ji-hyun slowly walked toward me.
“Your mother didn't disappear.”
I froze.
“What?”
He stopped directly in front of me.
His voice was barely a whisper.
“She was running.”
“Running from what?”
He looked at Tae-jun.
Then back at me.
“From us.”
My breathing stopped.
Before I could ask another question, the lights suddenly went out.
The classroom fell completely dark.
Then my phone vibrated.
One new message.
UNKNOWN NUMBER
I opened it.
There was a photograph.
My mother.
Young.
Smiling.
Standing in front of Haneul High.
Beside her were two boys.
Kang Ji-hyun's father.
Lee Tae-jun's father.
And behind them...
was me.
A little girl.
Maybe five years old.
Wearing the same silver pendant my mother had hidden from me my entire life.
My hands went numb.
Impossible.
I had never been to Haneul High.
I had never met these people.
At least...
That's what my mother had told me.
Another message appeared.
“You were there, Ha-eun.”
My heart pounded.
Then a second message.
“You just don't remember.”
I looked up.
The classroom door was open.
Tae-jun was gone.
Ji-hyun was gone.
And written across the blackboard in white chalk were five words:
WELCOME BACK, YOON HA-EUN.
That was the night I learned the truth.
Not about my mother.
Not about Haneul High.
Not even about the two boys I had fallen in love with.
I learned something much worse.
I had been part of the secret all along.
