“You didn’t bring those boys with you, did you,” my mother sobs. “How else do you think I got here, Mom?” I try to keep the defensiveness I’m feeling out of it, but it’s hard. “Where are they,” she doesn’t snap at me, mother never does, but she is upset with me.
