Chapter 15 : The Transformation

Kate closed the door of her room and stood in the quiet for a moment.

The east building was well maintained by the standards of the apocalypse world. The room she had been given was on the third floor as Chu Litian had specified, and it was larger than she had expected, with a window that looked out over the inner section of the camp and a bed that was functional and clean. Someone had prepared it recently. She did not think that was a coincidence.

She set her laser gun on the table beside the bed and sat down.

The camp sounds came through the window in layers. Generators humming. Voices at a distance. The particular rhythm of a community that had organised itself around survival and was functioning well enough to have developed something resembling routine. She listened to it for a moment and then turned inward.

The system mall opened cleanly.

She went to the familiar items first, the ones she had used in Plane 1 and understood thoroughly. They were still available, which she had expected. The system carried what worked across planes because what worked was what worked regardless of the world.

Beauty pill. Fragrance pill. Body shaping pill.

She purchased all three without hesitation.

Ding. Items acquired. Current balance 2190 points.

She took them in sequence the way she always did, sitting on the edge of the bed with the window light coming in grey and steady behind her. The body shaping pill first, feeling it move through Kelly's already capable frame and settle it into something that carried differently, a straightening and a balancing that had nothing to do with vanity and everything to do with the kind of presence that made people pay attention before they had decided to. Then the beauty pill, which worked on Kelly's face the way it had worked on Kate Chen's face, not dramatically but definitively, clarifying and refining without changing the fundamental structure of what was already there.

Then the fragrance pill.

She sat still for a moment after taking it, letting everything settle.

Then she stood and looked at her reflection in the small mirror on the wall.

Kelly had been beautiful before. The adopted sister's jealousy had not been irrational, it had been a response to something real. But the woman looking back at Kate from the mirror now was something that went beyond what jealousy had been responding to. She looked rested in a world where no one was rested. She looked certain in a world where certainty had become the rarest resource of all. And the fragrance moved around her like a second presence, not perfume exactly, not anything that could be named or located, just a quality in the air near her that made the space she occupied feel different from the space everywhere else.

She picked up her laser gun and walked out of the room.

The effect on the camp was immediate and moved in front of her like a wave.

She walked through the outer section first, taking the long route toward the supply area where she had noticed the distribution happening when she arrived. People looked. Not the assessing look she had received at the gate, not the suspicious look that a stranger in a closed community earns automatically, but something less guarded than either of those. People looked and then looked again and the second look was the one that mattered.

She stopped to ask a question of an older woman managing the supply queue, something simple about the camp layout, and the woman answered with a warmth that had not been in her face a second before Kate spoke to her.

She continued through the camp.

The fragrance traveled with her and ahead of her, and she watched it work on people the way she had watched it work in the Lu estate, without announcement and without resistance, simply making her presence feel like something worth being near.

She was crossing the open area between the outer and inner sections when she felt it.

The quality of attention she had learned to recognise.

She did not look up immediately. She continued walking at the same pace and let three more seconds pass and then she raised her eyes to the elevated walkway above the inner gate where Chu Litian was standing with two of his senior people, looking down at the camp with the comprehensive attention of someone responsible for everything inside the walls.

He was looking at her.

His expression had not changed. She did not expect it to. But his zombie senses had found the fragrance and she could see from the distance between them the same thing she had seen up close last night, that fractional processing, that response that arrived before it could be intercepted and was then very firmly managed.

He looked away first.

Kate continued to the supply area.

She did not see Chen Liling until she was on her way back.

The girl was coming from the direction of the inner buildings, moving quickly with the purposeful energy of someone who had just finished doing something or was about to start. She slowed when she saw Kate. Kate watched the sequence move through her face. Recognition. Assessment. The particular calculation of someone measuring a threat they had just realised was larger than they had previously estimated.

Chen Liling looked at Kate the way someone looks at a fire that has grown since they last checked it.

Then she smiled.

It was a very good smile. Practiced and warm and completely unconvincing to anyone who knew what to look for underneath it.

"I am glad you found your room," she said. "I hope it is comfortable."

"Very," Kate said.

Chen Liling's eyes moved over her with the same comprehensive assessment that she had probably applied to every woman who had ever come near Chu Litian, and Kate watched her reach her conclusions and file them and smile again.

"We should talk sometime," Chen Liling said. "About how things work here. It can be confusing for newcomers."

"Thank you," Kate said. "I will keep that in mind."

She continued past her.

Behind her she heard Chen Liling's footsteps change direction, heading back toward the inner buildings, moving faster than before.

Kate returned to her room and sat at the small table by the window and looked out at the camp while she thought about what was already in motion. The family was here. Chen Liling was here and threatened and moving. Chu Litian had noticed her twice in less than twenty four hours and both times his zombie senses had responded to something he could not place.

She was three moves into a ten move game and everything was proceeding as she intended.

She was still thinking when Xiao Lin arrived.

She corrected herself immediately. There was no Xiao Lin here. She was in a different plane. But there was a girl who had knocked on her door that morning to bring water, young and quiet with sharp eyes, and Kate had learned from one life of experience that sharp quiet eyes in a young girl usually indicated someone worth knowing.

She filed that away for later.

The system chimed softly.

Ding. Host's integration into Plane 2 environment progressing well. New revenge items now available in system mall. Please review at your earliest convenience.

Kate opened the mall.

She was reading through the new items when she heard it.

Voices in the corridor outside her room. More than one. The particular quality of voices that are trying to be quiet and are not quite managing it, the way voices sound when the people producing them are focused on something else.

Then her door handle moved.

Kate was on her feet with the laser gun in her hand before the door opened.

It opened anyway.

Three people she did not recognise stood in the corridor. They were not camp guards. They were not carrying official weapons. They had the look of people who had been sent rather than people who had decided, and behind them, just visible at the edge of the corridor where the light from the stairwell fell, was a fourth figure.

Chen Liling.

She was not smiling now.

She met Kate's eyes for exactly one second and then looked away, which told Kate everything she needed to know about who had sent these three people and what they had been sent to do.

The first one stepped through the door.

Kate raised the laser gun.
