Alpha Jasper Ravenwood closed the door of his limousine, aware of the chaos and commotion he had caused by making Nyx his chosen mate. This was somebody whose lineage he didn't know, he had no idea about. But he was choosing her over one whose lineage he knew absolutely everything about.
Biting his lip, Alpha Jasper tried to reassure himself. It wasn't his fault, there was no way he was going to be a father to disabled children and cubs, there was no way he was going to settle down with a lady with such a weak lineage. It was unheard of, and it wasn't going to start with him.
The door opened and the gust of wind that entered the car was cut off as his uncle closed the door shut as soon as he slipped into the lush seats of the limousine next to him.
The driver taking that as a signal began to drive, taking them to the palace. Although Alpha Jasper wanted to enjoy his ride in silence, he knew it was impossible. The air was heavy with unspoken words and questions, the air was laden with accusations that were yet to be voiced out.
“Why, Jasper? Why? Do you realize what you've done by the step you've just taken? Do you know that you're the first Alpha to reject his mate since Ravenwood was founded? Do you know what you've just done?”
“I've done what I feel is right, uncle. There's no way to spin it. Before you blame me, I'll tell you what I saw. I looked into her lineage and I saw imbeciles, imbeciles, uncle Ted. Who wants imbeciles as children? Her lineage is too weak, and despite how strong mine is, who knows, we might end up having an imbecile for a child!”
Allowing his words to sink in, Alpha Jasper knew he had won the first part of the argument. His uncle was silent, staring at him in wonder. Alpha Jasper watched him scratch his head that was now filled with gray hair and knew instantly that he was trying to think.
“She's from the Moonstone clan. They're the only ones that have a history of giving birth to stillborn children or imbeciles. That doesn't still give you a reason to reject her. At least, you should've seeked advice first.”
Alpha Jasper stared at his uncle, irritated. Why was he suggesting that he settle down with someone who for all he knew was an imbecile? It was not worth the risk, and he wasn't taking it.
His answer had destroyed the ceremony, and in place of the celebration that was supposed to take place had turned into a party of mixed feelings and an uncertain future. The people were restless because of his choice, it didn't show great leadership, and he knew the earlier he addressed the matter, the better.
“Seek advice? I had to take action, uncle Ted. And I won't deny the fact that I probably acted too fast and on impulse, but I had to do what I had to do.”
The limousine came to a halt next to the palace that had seen fifty seven Alphas live in it. Alpha Jasper was the fifty seventh Alpha, and not only was he one of the youngest, he was officially the first Alpha to reject his mate at the mate revelation ceremony.
Ignoring the guards and servants that stood, waiting for his return, he walked until he met Maria, the head servant, the woman he had grown up with in the same house as a kid. He only trusted her, and her alone.
“Is she in there?”
Maria nodded, giving him a weak smile that was filled with questions. She was the only servant that could talk to him without flinching, and at some point he had started treating her like the mother he has never had. That was why he could trust her, that was why she was the one in charge of anything ongoing in his room and that of his uncle.
His uncle stared at him, perplexed, wondering who he was referring to. He smiled at his uncle, trying to tell him he didn't need to know everything. Using superhuman speed to exit the entrance of the building, he entered his room, then locked the door behind him.
He smiled as soon as he saw her beautiful figure and the silky hair that caressed her waist. She was one of the most beautiful women he had ever come across, beautiful yet quiet, mysterious yet full of knowledge and the curiosity to learn.
Nyx Fredrick was the right woman to be his Alpha female and not a weak wolf whose lineage was nothing to write home about.
She was admiring the mini statue of him giving a speech, and she turned, sensing that someone was in the room with her.
He gave her his most brilliant smile, grinning from ear to ear.
“How did you get here so fast? I literally left you in the pack circle moments ago. Did Maria see you?”
“Yes, she did. I change forms, Alpha Jasper Ravenwood. Have you forgotten that? I transformed into an owl, and here I am. Now come here and kiss me before you explain the commotion you caused in the pack circle.”
Adhering to her instructions, he kissed her, relishing the smell of her perfume and the shampoo she applied on her hair. He wanted to always be with her, her and nobody else. He kissed her lips again, trying to slip his tongue into her mouth.
She disengaged, striking him playfully across the shoulder.
“We're not going there, Alpha Jasper Ravenwood. There's enough time for that, but first of all, explain why you left the little woman crying in front of the natives.”
Scratching his hair, Alpha Jasper tried to show how tired he was of explaining his decision to everybody.
“My God, Nyx, you won't believe what I saw when I used my intuitive powers to look into her background. She has a weak lineage, Nyx. Most of the children in her lineage were imbeciles and never survived past the age of fifty. I can't settle down with such a person, no. I deserve more than that, even if the moon goddess says no.”
He looked at her, and she stared at him lovingly, amusement, care and warmth in her eyes.
“Come here, Jasper Ravenwood. You were sent to the Ravenwood pack for a purpose, and if that purpose means you're going to reject your mate, then so be it. Now come on, forget about your rejected mate and come to bed.”
Her words resonating in his head, Alpha Jasper acknowledged the fact that he hadn't made a mistake by choosing her as his mate. The moon goddess could go to hell, and so could tradition.
He wanted only Nyx Fredrick, and even if everybody was against their union, he was going to fight for it.
Ditching his royal robe, he got into bed with her, cradling her slim waist
