“Tom!” Melissa half rose, afraid for him. He might hit his head or disturb some snake or other dangerous creature living there. Kneeling cautiously at the edge, she peered into the water mirroring the sky, making it almost impossible to spot him. A dark, long shadow moved below, snaking along. Her heart skipped in fear, then raced. “Tom!” she yelled hoping he could hear her. He broke surface with a shock—shooting up, his chest clearing the water, his eyes dancing. A kelpie! thought Melissa. Tom grinned hugely at her before he dived again, like a seal. The long shadow she’d seen in the water had been Tom.
