THE REJECTION

1108 Words
The moon hung heavy over Silverfang territory, full and silver and cruel in the way it lit up every face in the clearing. Ariana Ashford stood in the center of it all, her heart slamming so hard she thought the whole pack could hear it. Tonight was supposed to be the best night of her life. Eighteen years she had waited for this. Every wolf dreamed of the moment their fated mate bond would snap into place, that pull in the chest that told you the universe had chosen someone just for you. She had imagined it a thousand times. The warmth. The recognition in his eyes. She had never imagined it would feel like this. Alpha Kael Draven stood ten feet away from her, broad shouldered and golden eyed, the kind of Alpha every omega in the pack whispered about. And right now he was looking at her like she was something unpleasant that had been tracked into his house. "Kael." Her voice came out smaller than she wanted. "You feel it too. I know you do." The murmurs around the clearing rose. Hundreds of pack members had gathered for the ceremony, drawn by the announcement that their future Alpha's mate had finally been found. Ariana had felt the pull the moment he walked into the square. Undeniable. Overwhelming. Kael's jaw tightened. He looked past her, toward the elders, toward Selene Voss standing at the edge of the crowd with her arms crossed and a small, satisfied smile on her lips. "I feel something," Kael said finally. Hope bloomed in Ariana's chest, fragile and stupid and desperate. "But it isn't enough." The words landed like a blow. She actually swayed on her feet. "What?" "Look at you." He said it flatly, like he was stating a fact about the weather. "You're an omega. No pack rank, no political ties, no strength to speak of. I am going to lead this pack into a war with the eastern territories within the year. I need a Luna who can stand beside me in that fight. Not someone I'll spend my life protecting." "That's not—" Her throat closed around the words. "The bond doesn't care about rank, Kael. It never has." "Maybe not." His eyes were cold now, decided. "But I do." Someone in the crowd gasped. Even among wolves who lived by hierarchy and strength, what he was about to do broke something sacred, and everyone there knew it. Kael straightened his shoulders and lifted his chin, addressing not her anymore but the entire gathered pack. "I, Alpha Kael Draven, reject Ariana Ashford as my fated mate." The words hit her like claws raking down her spine. A physical pain, sharp and immediate, radiating out from her chest where the bond had just been ripped in half. She dropped to her knees in the dirt, gasping, both hands pressed against her ribs like she could hold herself together by force. "Kael, please." She hated how she sounded. Begging. Broken. Everything she swore she would never be. "Don't do this in front of everyone." He didn't even look down at her. "Someone get her out of here," he said to no one in particular. "This has gone on long enough." Selene appeared at his side almost instantly, resting a hand on his arm, murmuring something too quiet for Ariana to catch. Whatever it was made the corner of his mouth curl, just slightly, just enough for Ariana to see it through the tears blurring her vision. Two pack guards hauled her up by the arms, not gently, and started dragging her toward the tree line. The crowd parted around her like she was something contagious. Nobody met her eyes. Nobody said a word in her defense. "Let go of me," she managed, though her voice had no strength left in it. "Alpha's orders," one of the guards muttered, not unkindly, but not stopping either. They didn't take her far. Just past the first ring of trees, far enough that the pack wouldn't have to watch, and then they simply released her arms and let her fall into the underbrush. "Sorry," the younger one said, and for a second she almost believed he meant it. Then they were gone, jogging back toward the clearing, back toward their Alpha and whatever celebration would replace the mate ceremony that never happened. Ariana lay in the dirt and the leaves, the pain in her chest a living thing now, gnawing at her from the inside. Rejection wasn't supposed to happen this way. It wasn't supposed to happen at all, not to a true fated bond, not unless one of them meant to destroy the other completely. She didn't know how long she stayed there. Long enough for the cold to seep through her dress. Long enough for the moon to shift position in the sky. Long enough for the sounds of the ceremony to fade into something else entirely, drums and laughter drifting through the trees like Kael's rejection of her had been cause for a party rather than a wound. When she finally forced herself to stand, her legs barely held her. She had nowhere to go. An omega with no pack rank and no mate had no protection out here, not with unclaimed territory pressing in on every side of Silverfang land, not with the eastern packs already testing the borders. She should go back. Beg for a place in the servants' quarters, accept whatever scraps of dignity they'd allow her to keep. She took one step toward the clearing and stopped. Something was watching her. She felt it before she saw it, that prickling awareness at the back of her neck that every wolf learned to trust before their first shift. She turned slowly, scanning the tree line, and found a pair of eyes reflecting moonlight from the shadows. Not the amber of a Silverfang wolf. Black. Deep, endless black, fixed on her with an intensity that made her breath catch. The eyes belonged to a wolf easily twice the size of any she had ever seen, its fur so dark it seemed to drink in the moonlight rather than reflect it. And she knew, with a certainty that settled into her bones like ice water, exactly whose territory bordered Silverfang land to the west. Blackthorn. The most feared pack in the entire werewolf world, ruled by an Alpha so ruthless that even Kael's warriors spoke his name in careful, lowered voices. Alpha Lucien Blackthorn had just crossed into Silverfang territory. And he was staring straight at her like he had been waiting all night for exactly this moment.
