Mirabel pov On reaching the school, I rushed towards Tracy's class, but halfway to her class, I met her homeroom teacher, Mr Damone, a man in his late thirties. His face beamed immediately when he saw me "Miss Smith, are you here for Tracy," I can't just tell him that I'm there because I don't want my daughter to meet her father, bla bla bla. "I want to check up on her," I lied. "Well, you don't have to worry about that, Tracy is a smart kid, way smarter than her mates, I'm sure she's fine" I was in no mood for hearing his compliments, not that I minded but I needed to get to my daughter immediately. "Can I see her if you don't mind?" I said giving him a pleading smile. "Sure, they are at the playground, they are on the first break," "Thanks, Mr. Damone," I rushed to the playground. the playground was filled with children aged from 5-6 years. my eyes searched for Tracy, I froze at the spot when I saw her smiling excitedly at Jake, they seemed to have some kind of bond. I didn't want to interrupt them and make a fuss that would make me look suspicious, so I just stood there and watched, I saw how Jake pinched her cheeks playfully and she giggled, As I was thinking about the best way to take Tracy away from there. I heard her innocent voice shouting, "Mummy" as she waved at me. Jake turned to look in my direction. He was shocked, he looked from Tracy to me. The shock was visible in his eyes. "My angel", I said moving towards Tracy as I took her In my arms, and hugged her small body tightly, I didn't want to let her go, I'm afraid that they might take her away from me. when I finally released her she said, Mum meet my new friend, Mr Davies she said pointing at Jake. "Oh," I said feigning surprise. "It was nice meeting you sir," I said stretching out my hands hoping that he would just play along like we didn't know each other. "Nice meeting you too, Mrs," He said not sure of the name to add. "What a beautiful daughter you have," his voice sounded like he was inquiring about something, and I watched as he ceased his brow, I couldn't interpret his emotions. "Mum, did I forget my homework again," Tracy innocently asked. "No sweetie, I just wanted to check up on you" "I will be going now," I told her. "If you don't mind, I will drive you home, "Jake offers, he knows that I won't be able to reject his offer in front of Tracy. "Sure, bye Tracy," I waved at Tracy, as I walked towards the school exit with Jake. I watched as he made a call to his partners that he would be leaving now. The teachers stared at us, I know what they would be wondering, seeing the resemblance between Jake and Tracy, they probably thought that he was my husband. Jake opened the car door for me and I entered, he seemed like I gentleman, as he was before that incident. We drove quietly, and the quietness seemed very awkward. "I didn't know you were married," he finally breaks the silence. I didn't answer him. "You know when I first saw your daughter, I wondered if I have maybe donated my sperm for an artificial insemination, and made a daughter I didn't know of, how can there be such a resemblance between two people that are not related." He spoke on and I didn't say anything. "Mira, is Tracy, my child?" Boom, that question I dreaded the most has finally been asked, if I could go back in time, I would make sure Tracy didn't go to School today, I would take a leave and have a day off with her. "No, she is not," I said biting my lower lips, I didn't want to admit it to him, but my hands were trembling. I wished he wouldn't push further and just agree with my answer. "Mira, I know you more than anybody, I know when you are lying, you always bite your lips when you lie," He says looking at me but quickly diverting his eyes on the road to avoid an accident. "so what happens if she is your daughter, will you take her away from me," I asked him. the car came to a stop in front of a beautiful mansion, I stared surprised at why we were there. "This is not the company," "It's my house," he answered as he got down from the car and opened the door for me. "what will I be doing at your house," I asked surprised as to why he would bring me here. "I believe we have a lot to talk about, don't you think so," we entered the mansion, and I marveled at the interior decor of the house. the walls were painted with rich hues of Gold and white, the floor was made of published marbles that shone like mirrors. I stared in awe. "sit," he said. "Mira, why didn't you tell me about your pregnancy, I know that it was a mistake, and I will keep on regretting what I did, but you should have at least told me and I will take responsibility for my actions," I listened as he talked, I didn't know what to do or say, I just stared at the marbles on the floor. "I thought you wouldn't want the child," I finally muttered." I thought you would suggest an abortion," I told him. "you know I will never suggest that," "I will take legal responsibility as Tracy's dad," I heard him say. I did not want to mess with Tracy's mental health. she had lived for five years without a dad, how would she feel when Jake posed as her dad all of a sudden? "Jake, I know you want to take responsibility, but I think we are better off this way, let's just continue living like we have lived these past years, Tracy doesn't have a dad, and that's cool," The look in his eyes changed, he clenched his jaw and tightened his fist. "Mira, Tracy is my daughter and I don't need your permission to perform my duty as his dad," he sounded cold and harsh. "so what do you suggest we do announce to Tracy that she has a dad and move in with you and live happily ever after," I said sarcastically and with mockery, I was going insane, he should just forget about everything and move on with his life. "you should move in with me, marry me," I couldn't help but laugh at how funny he sounded. "you are not serious," I finally said after laughing my heart out. "I'm not joking Mira, it's either you marry me and we leave happily as a family and raise Tracy together, or I take her from you," his expression was serious. "you can't take her away from me" "I believe I can, all I have to do is file a lawsuit for the custody of Tracy, and believe me you will lose," he looked very serious, I can't let him take Tracy away from me. "How are you so sure that I will lose," I felt scared for a moment. will he do it? "I have the money, I can do it, besides I can sack you anytime and you can't win the custody of a child without a well-paying job," he said smirking. "I believe you have a choice," I was completely broken, he had it planned out, and I didn't stand a chance against him. he had the money and I had nothing. I slowly stood up to my feet and walked out. I brought Tracy back from school, I bathed her and we sat in the dining eating our dinner. "Mummy, Mr Damone says that I look a lot like Mr Davies," I choked on my food hearing her say that. I quickly grabbed a glass of water and gulped it down. "he did?", "Mm," she nodded. "and my classmate said that he is my dad," I choked for the second time. "sweetheart, some people look exactly like people that they are not related to, and he is not your dad," I can feel her face drop. "I wish I had a dad, like my friends do," I was taken aback by her comment, all this while I had thought that she was happy living without a dad, how stupid of me, she needs a fatherly figure in her life, and I deprived her of that. I am so selfish. "you have the most handsome and coolest father in the world Tracy," I assured her taking her tiny hands into mine and clasping them together.
