Chapter 12

1026 Words
The sea stack was left in an eerie calm immediately following Zephyr's disappearance, punctuated only by the rhythmic crash of waves against its base. The anchor point's fragile, azure glow took its place of the tainted green light. Elena was worn out and fell to her knees with her staff shaking in her hands. She was completely depleted by the raw power she had channeled. With grime and exertion streaking their faces, Kaelen and Bram reached her side. Even though Kaelen's arm had healed, it continued to throb, and Bram had a nasty cut on his cheek. “He’s…gone?” As he looked out over the turbulent water where Zephyr had vanished, Kaelen asked, his voice straining. Elena gave a slow head shake. "Swept away temporarily. However, the void is not gone. A lingering chill is still there, and I can feel its influence. The anchor point's blue light was still flickering when she looked at it. "It's broken. Here, the influence of the void has taken root." Even though they were no longer frantic, the Ancient Ones' whispers still carried a note of deep concern. They talked about the dark places, the wounds in the earth, and the sneaky way the void tried to grow in forgotten places. On their tired legs, the climb up the sea stack felt even more dangerous as they descended it. Kaelen was wary of any new attack from the lingering power of the void and kept a close eye on the churning waters. In the meantime, Bram looked out over the barren coastline, his broad shoulders slightly sagging from the ordeal. They didn't see Zephyr or any other Shadow Weavers when they got to the sandy cove. Although the air seemed to be lighter, there was still a faint echo of the corruption that had permeated the anchor in the ground beneath their feet. Using her earthly senses, Elena placed her hand on the sand. She perceived unnatural cavities and distorted energy flows beneath the surface, as well as a deep, unsettling thrumming. Not only had the void attacked the anchor point, but it had also sunk its teeth into the soil's very foundations. Elena murmured, releasing her hand. "The void isn't just influencing the anchor from above," she said. Under the surface, it has spread. It is deep within the earth itself. Kaelen picked up some sand by kneeling next to her. "What does that signify?" Elena spoke gravely, "It means the battle wasn't just for the anchor." "It was because of this location and the Ley Lines' connection to it. Zephyr was not merely attempting to weaken the prison; rather, he was attempting to construct a nest. They were overcome by a new sense of urgency. It was one thing to strengthen the anchor point, but the real threat was still far from over if the void had a foothold in the earth. They stayed in the cove for the next few days, with Elena concentrating on curing Kaelen and Bram and attempting to comprehend the nature of the void's lingering influence. She probed the depths with her earth magic, spotting the corrupted energy pockets buried deep beneath the coastline. The Waystone occasionally pulsated, but not in a way that pointed in a specific direction but rather as a warning, a subtle thrumming that mirrored the unease that was below. Elena began to realize at this point that the void was not only devoid of light but also consumed by order. It thrived on discord, division, and the fragmentation of harmonious energies. The void's true intelligence and purpose remained an unsettling mystery, despite Zephyr's fanaticism making him a willing conduit. Elena sat by the shore one evening, the Waystone glowing faintly in her palm, as the moon shone silver over the raging sea. The Ancient Ones' whispers were now clearer, no longer scattered, but a mournful chorus coming from the depths. The Voidborn's true essence was contained in a fragment in an ancient seal far below the surface that had been unknowingly disturbed by Zephyr's manipulations. The fight for the anchors was merely symptom management. The void was attempting to unleash a primal force in the corrupted depths, where the real threat lay. Elena told Kaelen and Bram the following morning, her voice filled with grim determination, "We have to go deeper." "Under this land, the void has established a foothold. Zephyr unintentionally agitated something a deeper seal. Kaelen gave the churning sea a second look before returning to the cliffs that hinted at the unknown depths. “Deeper? What do you mean underground? Elena gave a nod. "I am guided by whispers. An ancient route leads to a secret passage. Although it is risky, it is the only way to truly cleanse this location and stop the void from expanding internally. Bram clung more tightly to his sword. "We go wherever Zephyr's influence goes. to conclude this. They searched for the hidden passage, a small crack in the cliff face that was close to being swallowed up by the relentless tide, with a shared resolve. It took you into a dim, cramped tunnel filled with the earth's musty odor and the distant roar of the ocean. They were now being led into the unknown by the Waystone's brighter pulse, which was now stronger. The Ancient Ones' whispers became increasingly urgent as they descended into the cold, silent depths, no longer mournful but instead speaking of ancient guardians and lost legends. Elena's connection to the earth's deep, resonant core grew along with the chilling influence of the void. They had been driven to the edge of the world by the fight for the second anchor, but the real fight, against the corrupted depths themselves, was about to begin. They were plunged into a pitch blackness that was oppressive and thick with the stench of salt-laden rock and damp earth. The disconcerting sound of dripping water and the occasional whisper of unseen currents replaced the far-off roar of the ocean outside. Their bones were chilled to a level far beyond that of an underground cavern's normal temperature as the air became thick and heavy with a bitter cold.
