“Can someone get bed 4 for me. And Blake in bed 8 needs to go to physio.” Where the hell is my bag? “I’m off to lunch, then I have a meeting after, so Maggie is in charge.” I can’t wait to see Avery’s face. I knew she had had the job for days now. “Has anyone seen my bag?” I swear it was on my desk.
“It’s on your shoulder Sarah” so it is “Thanks Maggie”
As I walk towards the elevator, my phone rings. Rooting through my bag, I find everything other than my phone... aha, found it!
“hello”
“Is this Sarah O’Malley?”
“yes, can I help you”
“this is Pam Carter from Smithsview Memorial Hospital. I’m calling as you're listed as next of kin, for an Avery Spencer.”
“Avery! What’s happened to Avery?” I feel numb, what’s going on?
“there’s been an accident. She’s been admitted into the hospital. Are you able to come in to.......”
“I'm already here, I run paediatrics..... What ward is she in, I’m on my way”
“Ward 6, her Dr is Dr Lilly Matthews.” I hang up before Pam could say anything else. running back towards my office, I call out, “Maggie, I need you to run the floor. There’s been an accident, I have to go!” Before anyone can answer me, I’m running towards the elevator. I feel sick. Today was meant to be her day. Avery needs some light after Luke passed away. It was years ago but I watched the loss consume her, and her mother sucking what ever was left, lead her into a dark depression. I hope she’s OK, she has to be!
